How to change MK1 diesel motor mounting rubber from frame
« on: November 08, 2009, 07:33:09 pm »
Does anyone know a sure and/or doable way of removing (and installing a new) the motor mounting rubber (cylinder with rubber mounting) from the front motor mount housing on Mk1 diesel?  I tried to punch it out with a punch, but it didn't budge.  Does it need to be pressed out?  I need to change the rear transmission mount as well, so the same principles would apply to both.
I would appreciate your counsel.

use a C clamp and a large socket. Put the socket on the foot of the C clamp and then twist it out. You need the socket to fit around the rubber mount, but not bigger then the steel housing.

Would I need two sockets:  one for the housing, and another slightly smaller one to fit the rubber mount housing?

no just one that fits on the metal housing, if you have a smaller clamp you may need one to push the bushing through.

oh and when inserting the new bush, use some WD40 and punch it in with the clamp real quick.

Thanks, I was wondering if it would be helpful to lube up the new mount before installing it.  When I get another bracket, I will try what you say.  I don't have large enough sockets, so I'll need to find something comperable, or make something to work.

If you have an air hammer, it will punch it out pretty good. Just don't be surprised if the bush frags on you.

Yeah, it might fragment, I may just cut it with a sawsallthen press it back in with the socket and c clamp. Now I just need a bracket!
Thanks
