Were is the door switch on a 99.5 jetta and how does it work? All the doors work but the drivers
. I know the plunger type, and the new slide type, but didn't see anything right away by looking at it. I didn't get my repair manual yet.

At the door latch correct? Just tried freeing it up, looks like I'll be taking the door apart.

This is a very very very very very common MK4 problem... did I mention it's very common?!
On an MK4 the switch is built into the door latch itself within the door and seems to not last very well. Because it's inside the door it's a bit of a pain to get to but the repair is fairly staightforward and is known as the "3 dollar fix":
http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=77648
The danger of having a broken driver door switch is that if you unlock the car with the remote and then let yourself in the car via the driver's door the car won't know you've opened the door and will auto-lock itself in a couple of minutes. If you've gone back in the house to get something the keys are now locked in the car... BTDT.

I noticed the auto lock already
. But i didn't seem to have the auto lock working untill I tried to reprogram the (key in door) window feature to work again. I did get the switch to work if I pull on the inside handle all the way, after I cleaned it out with carb cleaner. So I hope I can just lube it up and it might have a chance to work better. Thanks for the info!
