Air bubles in Fuel Line
« on: September 06, 2009, 03:41:51 pm »
Hi all:

I recently changed the fuel filter in my 94 Jetta with AAZ. There is no apparent fuel leaks, but if it sits for more than 8 hours it struggles to idle and after 5 min its back to normal. I see a bunch of air bubbles in the inlet fuel line. Should I have to change the check valve on top of the filter too? Or how should I bleed the line?

Thanks..

did you check to see if the inlet banjo bolt was plugged up? once upon a time my car ran crappy, and i never could figure it out. tried the fuel filter, didnt help. added the lift pump, helped some, but still ran crappy. then i checked the fuel lines, they were spotless too. checked flow from the tank, it was fine. and i also checked the flow from the filter, it was alot less than just the lift pump, but it still had flow. then one day i took the filter off with the flange still attached and when i pulled the banjo bolt out, there was tons of gunk and crap sitting against the bolt. a pine needle or 2 got in there, couldnt get through, then blocked all pieces from getting into the filter. so i cleaned that out and i had an almost unrestricted flow out of the filter.

If you have have no leaks in banjo fitings, fuel lines, clamps, fuel filter etc. then look for leaks in the IP. I had a leaky distributor head o-ring and I was getting constant small bubbles in the clear to the IP. If I let the car sit for a week. I get so much air that the car wouldn't start. I replaced that o-ring in the head and no more bubbles - solid stream of fuel all the time and she starts the instant the starter motor spins.

A friend had the same issue in a 96 Goolf, he deleted the check valve with a small piece of pipe and used a f/f w/o a check valve...

Check your fuel filter spigot. Chances are it hasn't been tightened or cracked. It happened to me on an old filter/separator. Ran fine but idled horribly- as if it's ready to throw a rod. I had to look for it, and found it.... it was cracked, so I took the spigot out and used a temporary bolt to lock it in. It fired up and idled with no problems. Replaced the 20-year-old filter/separator a week later.

I just changed my fuel filter and has the same experience. Remove the check valve and check if there is fuel all the way to the top of the filter. If not, just fill it up until it begins to overflow a little. Did the trick for me.

Good luck.
