1991 vw 1.6 turbo diesel leaking exhaust fumes at the flange that the turbo charger bolts to the exhaust.  I noticed two bolts are missing, or studs?  Anyone tell me if they are bolts or studs. Wonder if they are replace if it will seal or will need a gasket.  Little smelling inside!!
how much work replacing that 4 inch square gasket?

Normally they are studs, but they can be bolts too.. just what you prefer.

There needs to be a metal gasket.

i had two of the studs snap when i attempted to remove the downpipe. i drilled the old studs, and retapped the with 8mm studs. the corresponding holes in the downpipe also had to be opened up to match, but it wasnt too difficult- just make sure you stuff a rag in the exhaust turbine housing to keep the shavings out
