Speakers in MK2 Jetta
« on: August 15, 2009, 08:55:17 am »
I was wondering what you guys have done for the dash in the MKII Jetta for speakers. It looks like 3.5" and I really don't like those. Have any of you put a 5.25" up there and still run the stock cover? Also I haven't even looked at the back to see what it has, but it can all be hidden so I am not worried. What have you guys done for these as well.
Background: I used to be a car audio nut and then decided it wasn't that big of a deal. My last 3 cars have had nothing for even a radio and my truck just has a factory am-fm radio and I am really tired of no sound. It has only been about 6 years since a radio in a daily driver.

I think JBL used to sell replacements for them. I'm sure if you did a search there are other companies that have something that'll fit.

Yeah, they're 3.5" tweeters. I'm in the process of replacing mine. I think a 2-way 5.25" could fit in there with the stock cover. They come straight off the door speaker lines. I'm not sure if there is even a crossover or if they are directly spliced to the same wires. The oem tweeters look to have some type of bass blocker capacitor on them though. Both mine were dead.

Yeah I didn't even know they had door speakers. I guess I will have to see if 5.25" will fit if nobody else has pics of it done. I know I can get them in there but I want the factory covers to fit. I know Boston Aucustic used to make a 4" that sounded way better than a 3.5" or maybe it was a 4.5" that they made. Any suggestions or something others have done I would love to see.

YEARS ago, MB Quart used to have a 4-speaker set (two for the dash, two for the front doors - where the stock ones go).  I had a set in my 1990 GTI and liked them very much.  Wish I could find them again now...

Infinity makes some really nice 2-ways that will fit in there. I think they're 3.5 or so. They sound really nice, but obviously, you'll have to pick up some base somewhere. But the high and mid-range on those infinitys is really nice.  I have a few sets that I run in my Rabbit and in my Jetta. You will need an amp somewhere, because a stock head unit can't keep up with the amps.

Good. I will use some of my left over stuff from years ago. The stock head unit is long gone and I have no idea what they even used to look like. I really wanted to have 5.25" up there but if what you guys are talking about is what I think it is I think it will be fine. I have some old polk tweets so that is why I want the big speaker to fit.

The infinity's are good, and I made a MDF sub box to punch a 10 inch sub. The interior is small, and I don't need that many decibels to make me happy. Its pretty easy to make good sound in these cars. I'm tempted to dynamat the firewall to cut down on the ambient and resonant noise.

get some audioscape door pods, then you can fit some nice componants in there, i did that and ditched the dash speakers, now i can turn it up and have the volume i want with the clarity i like :)
