best exhaust setup for turbo sound?

my rabbit may be getting a turbo soon and when it does it'll get a full exhaust too..  and I really want to have as much of the turbo whirl heard as possible.... but I also dont want it to me uber loud...

I'd love for it to sound like a jet engine, but that's probably not going to happen with a stock turbo setup...

I'm thinking a 2.5 downpipe back, with just a resonator..

what are you guys running?

2.5" downpipe with a resonator will be just fine... if it's a bit too loud on the highway for you you can swap out the resonator for a more serious muffler.

One unsolicited suggestion:  you've got a great clean engine bay... it would be a shame for a rock/stick/tin can/road kill to come up thru that gaping hole in the chassis and foul up your timing belt... oil everywhere!!!

We loves us our elderly diesels, and it would be a shame for one to meet an untimely death for the want of a timing belt cover?!    As I say, a completely unsolicited suggestion.

cool... ya, it seems that a lot of guys run 2.5 inch...

i'm not running a timing cover right now becuase I'd been hunting down a problem with the belt... The engine was chewing up the outer edge of the timing belt at the rate of 1/8 inch every 500 miles... I was changing the belt every other weekend for a while... I just recently found the issue... the IP bracket was being tweeked by the alternator bracket. the addition of a spacer seems to have fixed that.. BUT I am leaving the cover off for a while so that I can visually check the belt with ease...

I'm thinking of running a straight 2.5" pipe from the down pipe to just behind the rear axle beam. then weld a flange to the end of that...

then make two tail ends of the system... one straight pipe for cruisn/makin noise, and then another with a resonator/muffler for daily use..

that way I can swap it pretty easily as my mind changes... which i'm sure it will...

They are way quieter with a turbo than N/A.  I put a 2 in. on my Rabbit the whole way with a Magnaflow muffler which is actualy straight through and let the resonator on which was part of the Jetta pipe I got from the other car.  It was way too quiet and sounded more like a vacum cleaner so I made a pipe up and Mig welded it in where the resonator was.  You won't have to worry about any muffler making it too loud.  I tried to get one as close to the same dimensions as the original only in 2 in. and got an oval magnaflow.  I wish I would have just gotten the round style now because you have more room around it for clearance and to eliminate those pain in the ass rattles unless it's perfect.  It's still not near as loud as the  old N/A set-up with the factory resonator and muffler it had and the little pipe they used.

yes..

I sourced all the stock t3 turbo stuff from a 1.6 td, and it will be going on this motor in addition to an oil cooler and headstuds..

I'm glad you are using the studs, they will save a lot of problems in the long run.  Good luck with your project

3" turbo back, all Stainless.
Only way to fly.
This setup might be the quietest aftermarket exhaust I have heard,
all you hear is turbo,
and I did a 3" DP to a 3" down the tunnel,
and then to 2.5" Techtonics over axle pipe w/ resonator,
and dump from there.

The key to having an exhaust that does not drone
is thickness of pipe and good mounting.
My 5' stick of 3" SS pipe weighed like 40lbs...
Thick metal ensures the sound goes where it should:
out the back.
Buy the thickest pipe you can... better than a muffler!

off road pink diesel is nothing special. you ever see what they do to it when they put it in the delivery truck? pull the tanker up to the on road diesel tank, dump die in tanker, dump diesel in tanker, *BAM* instant off road fuel.

I'll second that.  I had a bird strike at 85mph.  Bird/grill parts got past the tiny gap in the cover around the injection pump and the belt jumped one tooth on the injection pump sprocket.  Results were big boost and very high EGT.

Best pipe for turbo sound: 2.5" from the turbo to rear bumper, with a cut down Cherry Bomb glass pack.  NAPA has thick walled mild steel exhaust pipe, straight and 90 degree mandrel bends that gas weld just great with the coat hangers with gold flux.

kinda makes me mad too, cause flowmasters are my favorite mufflers, by far.
but my car is about as loud as stock with the master-flow on there. but its not even that loud with a flat out down pipe.
