• I recall reading somewhere that you want to lubricate the seal with a bit of vaseline to make the seal go in easier.

• Are you talking about the OD or ID? For the ID I would use oil, diesel, ATF or whatever.
  
  It might be good to use permatex on the OD.

  Any seal should have the correspoding shaft or whatever part that is being sealed lubricated first and I like to take some fine sandpaper and polish the area the seal rides on also if possible.

• i always lubricate a seal before i install it. kinda seems like the lube glues the seal in after the rubber absorbs the lubricant.
