Install input shaft seal dry or wet?

Bosch VE.  I can't remember if the seal is installed wet or dry...grrrrr.  Thanks in advance!

I recall reading somewhere that you want to lubricate the seal with a bit of vaseline to make the seal go in easier.

Are you talking about the OD or ID? For the ID I would use oil, diesel, ATF or whatever.

It might be good to use permatex on the OD.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Any seal should have the correspoding shaft or whatever part that is being sealed lubricated first and I like to take some fine sandpaper and polish the area the seal rides on also if possible.

i always lubricate a seal before i install it. kinda seems like the lube glues the seal in after the rubber absorbs the lubricant.
