Just had my wheels balanced and that took care of the steering wheel shake when going down the road. I was told the left rear tire is out of round and 2 of the (steel) rims LF & LR were slightly bent. Threads have about 75% life left but is not a matched set. The tires that are on there are 185 65R 14 on steel rims with plastic wheel covers. What are my options as far as rims and tires? I'd also like bigger diameter rear tires (if possible) for lower engine rpm.
If you go to vwvortex you will find all the wheel possibilities you can imagine.

Well..... it's front wheel drive, so you need the bigger tires on the front if at all. Biggest tire I've had on a mark 2 car was 195/60 15. No room left between the tire and the strut for anything bigger. If you really want lower rpm, you might be better off with a tranny with better gearing..........
Iam running 195x 45-15 with 15 x 6 le casletts on my Mk1 caddy
Gee-Bee
Next on my list is to find a 1991 jetta 16V

ok, so, what are bigger rear tires going to do for a car that is FRONT WHEEL DRIVE?
I been driving rear wheel drive cars for a very looong time and forgot the VW is FWD.. But keep the jokes coming!

LOL X2
That is all they talk about over there rims coilovers and who has the lowest car. It never seems to end
just put some 195/60/14's on it with some 14x7 wheels. it will handle like a mofo. if you like the low pro look, then go with some 205/40/17's or something. my jetta has some of those on it and i can take corners like no other...
I've got 195/50/R15 on my Sebrings (heavy I know but they look better than the 14" steelies!)
The front have Goodyear Eagle F1's - will be going Toyo T1R's when needed.
The rear have Continental something or other.
Brilliant handling on the twisties we have round here and *touch wood* have not let me down no matter how hard I push her.
