If it were so simple it would have been done by now. If Chrysler did it back in the 80's then high-end companies (you know, the ones not on the brink of dying every decade) have done similar research. Mercedes had a production direct injection gas engine and fuel injected engines in the 1950's!

Wow, kinda interesting.  Amazing in fact, that they would put such an interesting engine in such a stupid car.
