if you have an OEM design, its only held on with a NPT nut on the threaded stud the filter screws to... this threaded stud / pipe is about an inch longer than the stock pipe. There will be a gasket similar to what every oil filter has that seals the top of the cooler to the filter flange on the engine. Did you get the longer pipe with it and the nut ? Or, did you already have an oil cooler you are changing ?

Looks like mine. You will need the longer pipe if it was not in the box.

Sorry, I should have been more clear... there is a threaded steel pipe in the center of the filter flange on your block. It is what your filter screws onto. You will remove it. The new pipe will the same diameter / threads, but be a bit longer. If you put it next to your cooler, you will simply add the height of the cooler to the length of this pipe. There is nothing special about it beyond that. You will also need a low profile nut to secure the cooler to the flange. If you don't use one, you will have some non-filtered oil by-passing the filter by leaking past the pipe. Besides, the cooler will fall off the flange every time you change the filter.

Remove oil filter, which is a bit of a twat in itself.
Remove 27mm nut.
Remove 2x water hoses.
Remove oil cooler.
In true haynes fashion, refitting is reverse of removal.

Was this a replacement for one leaking oil into the coolant? A few changes of plain water and washing powder will work wonders in getting all that sludgy crap out. DON'T USE WASHING SODA, OR CAUSTIC SODA or SODIUM HYDROXIDE! as these will be fantastic at dissolving oil, human flesh and aluminium engine components. Enjoy!
