i have been told that if my fuel pump is not timed properly it can be noisey, well my car actually sounds like a tractor, my friend as a tdi i know they are pretty quete but it makes mine sound like the oldest diesel around what can i do to cut down on the noise, im seriously thinking about binning my motor and putting a tdi in instead
IDI's or the older motors sound like old tractors, you aren't alone.
Since you're in the UK there must be plenty of older diesel's around for you to compare to.
TDI swaps are possible, but usually not cheap, and the emissions people might nail you for it (I think you guys have tougher laws on that than we do in the US).
Check with someone local that's done it before you begin.
My old AAZ sounded like my Dad's tractor...and smells like it too lol
new valve followers if there hydrolic
better air intake system
i heard one semi start up like a gasser then after 3min it started purring into a diesel
preatty cool
its true, the IDI engines sound noisy as hell compared to the tdi units
Yeah a little clackin now and then won't hurt anybody and it quiets down a good bit when it warms up. My boss has a 2009 Jetta TDI and we pull in about the same time and the other guys laugh when we park beside eachother and there is so much difference in sound. But I kind of like the sounds it makes and you can kind of get a feel about how it's runing from them I like the TDI's a lot but with all the high tech stuff on it I wouldn't even consider it myself. He gets 47 mph coming to work and I got 46 the other day when I checked my mileage after I put the old original t3 back on. He has 140 horses though but I like the simplicity of the IDI's with a turbo myself and there ain't a thing on it that's hard to fix or super expensive. But it's comparing apples to oranges to me. I enjoy the drive too, 75 mi. each day. My first 2 years I drove my 92 Park Ave. Buick with every creature comfort there is and it's still a nice car and the Rabbit just has a heater but I wouldn't trade my 81 Rabbit for it because it's my creation and I like listening to every sound it makes and know I made it do that and keep it that way and get a lot of happieness out of it. If a person doesn't like tinkering they should have a new car or just drive cheap throways. My problem is though that have 2 other vehicles but only want to drive the Rabbit but I don't want to get rid of the other 2. It's all in what makes you feel good, not what it's worth or costs either way, less or more.

they are hydrolic only been in a few month but it is still tappy
what do you mean about better air intake system (bigger air box???) would this make it a bit qiuter???
the best way ive found to drown out the tapping is to fit a mesh type air filter to the intake pipe, itll help to get the turbo whistle a bit more noticable, which is soooo much nicer than the sound of the tappets
