What is the best way to pull the motor? To do it with the tranny still attached? Or to separate them in the car? Car is a 93 golf AAZ manual trans, no AC. I want to re-build the engine.
Thanks!
I'm going to take the complete front off my 97, and disconnect the drive shafts and pull it out the front. Doing that tomorrow
Part of the answer depends on what equipment you have.
Those with a cherry picker or overhead winch seem to like to lift the complete unit (engine and tranny) up thru the top.
I own a floor jack and so always pull the front end off and then roll the complete unit forward and out. I've never had a problem with broken bumper bolts, but that's just me.
Either way, most folks find it easiest to leave the engine and tranny bolted together for removal, and most will pull the A/C compressor first and tie it out of the way to prevent needing to recharge the system.
Up and out. 4 hours motor tranny and axels all out. Beat that time:P
Depends on the reason for the re-build. If you're just looking for starting compression, do it "in frame". I can vacuum test the head, ring and incert it in less time than most can pull the motor. If I have to do more I drop it out the bottom. Good luck-warren
