Hydraulic lifter test

is there a way of testing the Hydraulic lifters?
or the way the supposed to act/feel?
stiff? spongy? is there a spring inside?
'97 Jetta - 4Dr - 1.9 TiDi (Forth Car)

Yup... the Bentley has the full procedure, but the basics are:

- get the engine up to operating temperature and then shut it off
- quickly remove the valve cover gasket
- with a non-marking stick (wood etc) press down on each lifter in turn
- they should only depress 0.1mm (0.004 inches) with normal hand pressure
