HELP!! is my exhaust manifold usable
« on: April 18, 2009, 01:50:15 am »
As usual just as everything is going to plan something goes wrong.

Basically I had to get the two nuts holding the exhaust heat shield (the one that is screwed into the manifold, if that makes sense) removed by a garage as they were stuck on, they removed them but the stud on the outer one came out as well as the nut.
The thread is still good but looking closly through I can see there is a small hole that goes into where the gases would be.

Can I just get a new stud or bolt and screw it in tight or is my manifold toast?

Thanks (its so typical as I was planning to put the head back on today)

sorry, explain why the manifold would be toast?

I completely don't understand what the problem is at all ...

Why can't you just thread another stud/bolt/anything into it ... ... ... I'm really missing the point. Maybe re-word the issue?

if it was like that before.. then close your eyes, put a bolt in there, put it back together, and forget you saw that little hole.. simple as that. but you could always spend some greenbacks on a new one if you have more dollars than sense.

The hole goes all the way into the exhaust ports of the manifold?  Take a picture if you can.

hi thanks guys, sorry for being a bit crazy in my first post. I like to have everything organised so when there is something different (i.e. a tiny hole in the manifold) i went a bit loopy.

I have basically got another bolt of the same size but longer and screwed it in with a nut and washer on the threads, then I just secured the heat shield by doing up the nut. I've tightened up the bolt quite tight so I'm reasonably happy it can't leak at all. If it does then its easily removable and I'll find another fix.

I've just finished aligning the head onto the block and have put the bolts in a tiny bit more than finger tight for the night. I'm quite exited to have it running as it will have, brand new head, new genuine bosch injectors and  new bosch duraterm chromium glow plugs. Sooo expensive but the bores look so good (all honing marks still there and no lip to speak of) I reckon its a good investment.
