new belt, new alternator, same old irritating and embarrassing shreaking sound coming from under the hood. When i put a load on the alternator like a/c or even heat it starts. worse when its wet. Besides the hard to find splash guard, what other alternatives does one have to cover it all up?

V belt is slipping on the alternator, I get it on a regular basis. You can try taking some sandpaper or emery cloth to the pulley (with the alternator out of the car). Pulley should come off the alternator in two pieces....... Too much wear, probably should have a new pulley.

Has anyone roughed up the pulley with emery cloth and not shredded the belt?

are you sure the belt has enough tension? i just replaced the belt and it was a tad bit smaller and it fits on real tight like. My car used to squeal ALL the time dry or wet

it was embarrasing

Mine is starting to squeal to! I just replaced it last week!!!
I think it's just loose. Belts stretch over time.
Is your belt all smooth and shiny?

http://www.vwdieselparts.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8173&highlight=belt+tensionercheck out that link...I am doing that with my new turbo engine as soon as it is in. I started it already with the N/A. I replaced the bearing, retightened, sanded, etc and the thing would never stop squeeling. I had everything off the front of the engine put it all back on after inspecting and cleaning and it still did it....right now I have a metal piece with 2 small roller bearings on one end and a hole in the other just like the guy above. I think I even posted in that thread a couple of times when I started to make that piece.
