I'm very new to the world of VW diesels.  I just got mine about 1 month ago.  It is a 91' jetta non-turbo diesel w/ 111,000 miles.  I have been burning a little oil and noticed some smoke coming out when I take off my oil cap.  What exactly does this mean?

If its not a huge constant amount, its normal blow-by. All engines, new and old have some. The question is how much. Be sure to keep your air filter / manifold clearn so you don't have a run-away event.

I have a lot of smoke and preasure comming out of the oil vent hose and oil fill cap on my 85 golf with unknowen milage. if I hook up the relief hose going from the valve cover to the intake manifold I loose oil out the dip stick if I unhook it I don't loose oil and I have no blowby comming out the dip stick is this still bad rings or a valve?

Would synthetic oil keep the smoking and pressure down when I open my oil fill cap? I know the syn v. dino oil question has been posed many times, but I have heard many different responses.

Sounds like you have just a little more than normal blow-by. I would not worry about it if your oil consumption is tolerable (1 q extra per oil change interval is my idea of acceptable) - so I'd get / made an external oil separator / breather for your valve cover vent.

Same thing....  I would not worry about it if your oil consumption is tolerable.  Go synthetic and your mpg will increase and your starting will be easier in cold weather especially. The smoking is normal blow-by so don't worry about it. The pressure, your breather can't be restricted. But, oil type will not have a big affect on this. If your rings are shot, they are shot. Live with it or rebuild. Likely, living with it will be OK as long as it runs well in all other aspects.

you got the car 1 month ago... how long was the car sitting for, b4 the purchase? and b4 that? and b4 that

a leak down test would be a better test then a compression test.

if its been sitting for a couple of years, you could end up with stuck rings..

or worse, a bad ring caused by anti-frezze sitting in the chamber, just becuase a bad head gasket that caused a hole bunch of pitting.

symptoms were. low coolant level all the time, coolant hose's were hard as rock.
my guy didn't do the ring job yet and i don't think he's got it planned in the future either. sad and cheap.

as for the smoke coming out of the PVC valve/oil cap like a ciemny on fire.. if your worried about it, you can divert it to the ground (just like the big trucks) and plug up the part that connnects to the air intake (N/A). turbos are on the boot near the turbo
