Will the .65 or .68 5th gearset work in a FN coded tranny from an '81 Jetta?

Which trans is the gear set out of? If it is out of another 020 then it should work.

This tranny currently has the .75. I want the tallest gearset possible for the FN 020

The 020 FN came with the .71
the difference between the .71 that you have, and the .68 or .65 is less then 200 rpm's and like $350
why not stay with the .71?
65 mph will run you 2500 rpm, right where you want to be

Some FN's came with a .75 depends on the exact build date.

Those are for the TDI trans. Not the 020.
I cant remember the codes but it's like a 02J or something, cable shift trans.

my bad.. lmao
Still tho the diff between .75 and .71 is next to nothing and is it really worth the time and effort?

This works with all manual transmission VWs from 1996 to the present, as well as many older models.
1996 vw's came with an 020 transmission. except passat TDI's with the 02A transmission?
i'm pretty sure it would work with any 020 5 speed box, but maybe someone can confirm for sure?

Those .65, .68 5th gear sets are for a european gearbox application which uses the same shaft design as the 02A and 02J boxes. That is why they work for those gearboxs. Not compatible with the old 020. Swapping a 020 5th gear is intensive and as said previously, the RPM drop isn't huge. I considered it when I put a gasser box in my '90 Jetta diesel. Decided it was too much to swap gear sets for an extra 100 RPM drop or whatever. That tranny swap was totally worth it w/o messing with it's innards. I installed a .658 on my 02A CNT trans (sourced: 97 Passat TDI) for my 86 Golf TDI epic and this gear swap is pretty easy making it worth it in my view.

My rabbit's 020 with a .71 5th runs
2350rpm at 100km/h (60mph)
That'd be 2491rpm with a .75 fifth.
Very worth it.

The 5th swap is easy on an 020. I used a gasser box with a .75 5th. we'll see how she runs.
