Just curious what everyone is getting for fuel mileage with or without mods. All i have done is turned the fuel screw in 1/2 turn and spun the pin in the lda and set the boost to 18psi and on this last tank i only got 37mpg. :( Just wondering if thats close to everyone else or if maybe i have something off like the pump timing and im wasting to much fuel. Lets see what everyones getting and what kind of mods you have.

Winter's very hard on a diesel's fuel economy... winterized fuel has fewer BTUs, tires are stiff, oil is thick, snow is hard to push thru, and engine takes much longer to get to efficient operating temperatures.

The literature reports declines between 10-25% for diesel-powered cars during the winter.

Other factors:  engine size ?  chassis ?  ratio of highway/city ?  Driving style ?  Hills ?

BTW, there's people on this forum from all over the globe so we'll need to know your location.  I'm betting my gallons are not the same as your gallons ??!!

To (finally) answer your question:  my 1.9l AAZ, with about 10K miles since rebuild, using dino 10W30 breakin oil, a hot pump, 20+ psi of boost, Goodyear Blizzaks,  is getting about 35 miles to the US gallon.... all of it in the city, at temperatures around -15F.

When my Jetta was still stock, it did 46.76 MPG for the last tankful.
That was including some quick back-road driving and performance measurements as well.
All stock, except boost turned to 1.2 bar (about 17 psi) and fuelling turned a bit up. That MPG was measured over a drive of  ~1000 km.

1.6 stock aside from a bad ass pump from Giles, K&N panel filter, WG blocked off boosted up to about 23 lbs, 2.5 straight pipe.

I can't say I've noticed a 25% economy drop maybe.....8% :)

I always fill up at Shell using their Ultra Diesel and I use 100ml of Crappy Tire's Diesel Additive on every fill up. I use Shell Rotella 10W40.
I would say 30-40% of my driving is on snow covered roads, and I'll rarely take it up to redline, most of my driving is highway driving keeping it between 85 and 110 kmph. When I fill up, I always fill the tank right up to the top pushing the air vent button inside, which usually adds a good 2-3 minutes to my fill up and a few bucks more on the bill.... I plug my cars block heater into a timer at night, it will heat the car about 4 hours before I wake up to go to work.
All this being said, I always see 800 a tank I'm sure I could get up to 900 - 950, but I don't know how far into the red I can take the fuel gauge before I have to get out and push.

Cheers from Ontario.

great answers and thanks for the quick replies. i forgot to mention that i live in md and it is bitter cold right now but the last tank of fuel the temps were between 30-45 degrees. I also have a 2.5 inch turbo back straight exhaust and k and n drop in filter along with the increased boost and turned up fuel. I also plug the car in at night and let it warm up for about 10 minutes before i go to work. I know the idle time hurts mpg average so i am considering that.

Kepp the info coming

I live in AK so temps nowdays are -15F, 10F, sometimes it stays -40F for a few days straight dropping to -55F once in a while.
MPG got down to 33 'till I retarded the timing a bit now it's 38-41mpg.

Also a couple weeks ago I started running delo 400 10w-30 onstead of 15w-40.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Florida weather:
(A bitter cold 55 right now!!)
Stock motor, Large K&N intake, and 19 PSI (MBC) otherwise stock. 1985 Jetta T3 TD.

as high as 41.6 (Trying to use the upshift indicator... some of the time!)
and as low as 34-35 MPG (Trying to bury every honda product in diesel smoke)

I also cannot cruise the highway (most of my driving) at any less than 70mph. Its florida, and you will get run over in the slow lane doing 60 in a 50 zone....
But I bet if I could drive one whole tankful like my dad drives, I could easily (?) see the 45-49 MPG many report (Many over 50 years old, that is!)
nothing personal, but I gotta GO!!

I'm in Maryland too where might you be? We are so so rare around here..

Im in Carroll County with all the hillbillies in diesel pickups who think stacks give you 500hp.

Looks like ,y mileage may not be to far off then i was thinking of letting a shop double check my pump timing but with the answers im getting it looks like im close.

Well, we don't call it the Great White North for nothing !!

Tonight's low will dip below -35C... that's -31F.  Good battery, good oil, good compression, good glowplugs... no worries !

My 1.6L NA Rabbit MK1 consistently got 49  - 51 mpg. Most of my driving was highway at 65 mph with a 5 speed. No a/c, no power anything. I'll let you know when I'm driving the Dodge caravan with the 1.6T what kind of numbers I see. Should be in the next couple of weeks. In SE Michigan they tend to keep the roads free of snow most of the time. I did not notice an increase in the winter. Remember, at least for an NA, the cold winter air packs more O2 in the cylinders for better efficiency after warm-up. Maybe my long highway drives with more O2 made up for the extra burn to get to temp. I never let mine idle to warm the engine as I had a block heater.

Great White North is an understatement with some of the blizzard photos I've seen over the years.

31 below? No doubt 31 above is bikini weather.. :)
