I'm commuting in a dead-stock, pretty tired 1.6 TD (almost 500,000km) running synthetics, at 100-110 km/h and get an average of 918km per tank. That drops to 804km (avg) in the winter   :?

Cheers,
Andy

The Eco gets mid 30s in town and high 30s on the highway.
The Passat gets low 40s in town and high 40s on the highway.

Sounds basically good, but not very precise!
I assume you don't use all your fuel in the tank, so are you extrapolating?

[IMO a tired engine is not neccessarily less economic]

My last fillup on my Quantum gave me 49.23mpg UK Big gals, or 41mpg[US baby gals], or 1040 km/tank equiv. This was from a trip where 3/4 of travelling was around 70mph /3000rpm, with the rest travelling at about 45mph or a few periods of 80mph.
Recently on even split mixed driving I've been getting about 43mpg.
This compares with the official 42.1mpg urban, 38.1mpg @75mph, and 57.6mpg @ 56mph all for a waggon. The fastback and the sedan both have the better 62.7mpg @ 56mph, but the fastback is best @75mph with 44.1 mpg official.
On Saturday I shall repeat the trip, and try to run the car at 56mph to see if I can match my other QuantumTD waggon's best of 62mpg

Well, I took the identical trip yesterday and tried to keep around 55 to 60mph. Filled up the tank and got 46.8mpg. [Imp.] I expected something nearer mid 50's . I'm very disappointed.   Even allowing for slight variations on filling up, I'd expect at least 50mpg.  I wonder if its the injectors. Maybe the pump doesn't advance as much as it should at 2500 compared with 3000rpm

Haha, I always have four wheels on mine, hehe, I know what you ment though.

I had a one gallon fuel tank on the floor with quarts marked on it. Driving 55mph I got 10 miles per quart, so 40mpg. I slowed down to 45mph and did 12.8mpQ, or 51.2mpg. That's assuming my odometer is accurate, but it still shows the difference of driving fast or slow. This winter I get 38-40mpg.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Just thought I'd bring this one back up to post on my experience with winter fuel.  I never kept a log of my fuel economy until I got my '94 this spring.

In summer and early fall it averaged about 43 mpg US.  Now with winter fuel I'm down to an average of about 37 mpg US, a 14% drop.  Would be curious what kind of mileage drop others experience in winter.

great answers and thanks for the quick replies. i forgot to mention that i live in md and it is bitter cold right now but the last tank of fuel the temps were between 30-45 degrees. I also have a 2.5 inch turbo back straight exhaust and k and n drop in filter along with the increased boost and turned up fuel. I also plug the car in at night and let it warm up for about 10 minutes before i go to work. I know the idle time hurts mpg average so i am considering that.

Kepp the info coming

I'm in Maryland too where might you be? We are so so rare around here..

Im in Carroll County with all the hillbillies in diesel pickups who think stacks give you 500hp.

Looks like ,y mileage may not be to far off then i was thinking of letting a shop double check my pump timing but with the answers im getting it looks like im close.

My Blue Bunny is happily hopping around up here in Hagerstown Md. comuting between Fredrick in the Summer on I-70 running 50-52 mpg every tank running between 65-75 mph climbing South mountain and Braddock mountain everyday.   It's just a rebuilt 1.6 N/A with a 5 speed .71 high gear,no modifiations at all other than .020 rebore.  With the .76 highgear it did between 45-47 mpg.  Honestly it doesn't seem to matter how fast or slow you go with it the mileage doesn't vary more than 1-2 mpg at the very most.  I can't wait to see what the new T/D will be like this Summer pulling the mountains and yes i do have a EGT gauge with the Spruce thermocouple to keep an eye on it.  Probably ougtht to have my 60 year old ass kicked for even thinking about taking the perfect little N/A out, but I want to play too.  When I grow up though I'm gonna get a Jetta

My 1.6L NA Rabbit MK1 consistently got 49  - 51 mpg. Most of my driving was highway at 65 mph with a 5 speed. No a/c, no power anything. I'll let you know when I'm driving the Dodge caravan with the 1.6T what kind of numbers I see. Should be in the next couple of weeks. In SE Michigan they tend to keep the roads free of snow most of the time. I did not notice an increase in the winter. Remember, at least for an NA, the cold winter air packs more O2 in the cylinders for better efficiency after warm-up. Maybe my long highway drives with more O2 made up for the extra burn to get to temp. I never let mine idle to warm the engine as I had a block heater.

You're right about the o2 making a difference, I've noticed lately my Rabbit which sounds just about like your's, {1.6 N/A 5 speed and no extras} has seemed noticibly peppier lately since it's been a lot colder and less smoke too, other than starting.  Of course this is after it warms up though but I can't say mine has been any easier on fuel though but no harder on it either.  But it does deffinately seem to be quicker than in the Summer now that it is in the 20F range at times.  It makes me wonder how my turbo motor would act now if it was in   Another funny thing is the transmission seems to work better now than in the summer which has had Amsoil gear oil in it since last Spring when I put new bearings in it.  It doesn't make sense, I've read that it might be a little too slippery for the synchros which I didn't change by the way and didn't see a reason to.  I think I'm gonna use the Jetta 5 speed that came with the engine with regular 80-90 when I put the motor in, it seems to shift fine test runing the engine.
