No cruise control
« on: November 19, 2008, 06:05:29 pm »
Hey guys,

I am brand new to diesels and this kinda cruise control set up.  Any who..Mine does not work.  When I select the cruise to on, then hit set nothing happens.  From my research on here, this is a vacuum operated system.  The linkage on the fuel pump is connected.

Where should I start.

Sorry for the newb post

My car is a 91 Jetta turbo diesel 1.6l

Cheers

Chad

check fuses first.

also, the vacuum actuator can rot away so that it can't move the accelerator.  you could fix that with a tire patch kit or something.  if you don't see any obvious cracks, then you could hook up a vacuum gauge to the line going to the actuator, and checking it as you drive and use the cruise.  that way you'll know if its the actuator or subsequent hose going to it.

if its not a vacuum leak, it could be the unit itself... or a simple wiring issue...

Hey thx for the reply.. As I have no manual at all but one is ordered, wher are the fuses for CC located.  I check quickly under the dash but nothing said cruise control.  Is there somewhere else to look for fuses?

I will also get a vacuum gauge and see if I am getting vacuum.

Thx

C

i found that most of the time it's either the vac switches/ vents under the dash on the brake and clutch peddles OR the vac pump under the hook on the drivers side frame rail died.

The wire off the back of the speedo fell off on my car

Once that was hooked up it worked but kept shutting off, ended up the vac switch on the brake peddle was adjust to far away from the peddle.

Anyway, once you get your Bentley there is a good section in there with the instructions to test it out.

My cruise control doesn't work either, and after following the Bentley troubleshooting guide, it all checked out except that the speed sensor resistance (which is attached to the backside of the speedometer) is quite a bit higher than what Bentley says it should be, so I suspect it's tired.  Gasser speed sensors fit, but are different than diesel sensors. I'm still looking for the right replacement sensor, so I haven't been able to replace mine to verify that truly is my issue.  You'll need a mulitmeter to do the troubleshooting.

FYI - the cruise control brain is an aluminium box about the size of a cigarette pack mounted on the backside of the center console.

This summer my cruise control worked intermittently and eventually stopped working all together.
I poked around at a few things, but it ended up being the switch itself. I popped it off, cleaned it up a bit and now it works normally again.

Costs you nothing more than 5 minutes of your time to check it.

my switch has been starting to act up but I couldn't see a way to take it apart. I'm all about taking stuff apart but I need to be able to make it usable again. Does the stalk just snap together?

Yeah, I just popped mine off with a screwdriver.

Inspiration from this posting on TDIclub (scroll past the VAGCOM screen shots)

Mine looks a little different both inside and out, but essentially the same.

I stopped at Checker on the way home, grabbed a can of contact cleaner. popped off the switch (broke it ) sprayed cleaner in there while pushing buttons. Drove home and it seems to be MUCH better now.

Thanks for the tip!
