well i finally got my 1.6 td build finished and running, my only concern is that on cold startup i have a lot of white smoke that smells like fuel, but it goes away after running for about a min. also its hitting the rev. limiter at a very low RPM, i had my pump rebuilt by a reputable diesel shop near me and they did some mods to it for me, does this sound like they messed something up? pump timing is set as close to 1.05mm as i could get it using a SAE dial indicator which i have it as close to 0.04134 in. as i could get, other than that car starts right up, and runs great. any help appreciated.

retard it back to 1.00mm and see what that does? it can't hurt?
how far are you into your break in on the motor since the rebuild?

I thought white smoke meant it was too retarded?

Motor ran for the 15 minute break in period at above idle speeds, oil and filter changed, drove around block 2 times, prolly around total of 10 miles on motor. have not launched or abused it at all, no more than 1/4 throttle tops.

yes, the motor is very rattley, but its been over a year since it ran last so i could just not be used to an old diesel motor, but it does have that distinct diesel rattle.

also noticed the motor does not seem to change any on cold startup with the cold start cable pulled out or in, could this be related to the smoke?

Seriously try changing the timing. on a new block, from what i've read, white smoke is a timing dealio or glow plugs that don't turn on for what ever reason.

All right, I didn't realize it was a brand new build.  If you have less than 10 miles on it and haven't gone above 1/4 throttle, then your white smoke is because your rings haven't seated.  You need to seat the rings and more to the point you have a limited amount of time to do so.  You need to get the engine warmed up to normal operating temp and then get the pedal well up above 1/4 throttle for short bursts.  Like 3/4 throttle for 5 seconds and let off for a few seconds and do it again.  Preferred is on hills and towing a trailer...  If you keep babying it the rings will not seat and the cylinders will glaze..

Andrew

Ditto !!  And as much of a synthetic oil freak as I am, this is the one time you really want the dino oil in the crank, NOT the synthetic. Change after a good 10K miles.

well the thing is it only smokes white on a cold startup. and for about a minute, and during this time it misses real bad and i gotta keep my foot on it to keep it fom dying,

then after a minute everythings fine, it really feels like my cold start cable isnt doing anything when i pull it, but i can see it moving externally. but it has no effect on how its running if i push it in or pull it out when its cold. and yes, only conventional oil on new motor. it has brand new bosch glow plugs also, and it does start right up, 1st try, no long cranking or cycling glow plugs

Sounds like a cylinder isn't sealing until it gets warm

Did you get your injectors done at the same time?

Hate to bump this old of a thread, But I've run into the same issue.

Car on cold start will stumble, and I get a bunch of white smoke. Half way down the street it's fine and runs perfect. Pump is timed by ear and seat of pants. No smoke normal driving, little black smoke under heavy load. The CS knob pulled helps. It wont die at idle cold, just feels like a bad misfire.

Injectors haven't been pulled. GPs are new, as is their relay. No bubbles in the new fuel line. I do plan on "pimping" the GP wiring out. The strip fuse is gone and jumped (not me.)

Mind you, it's only down to 30 degrees F right now at night. Winter's Coming.

Sounds like your cold-start is being made full use of. The bushing is probably starting to seize up. Very common issue and a simple fix.
