How do, just wondered if anyone had come accross these symtoms before.
Problem worse when warm.
Problem worse going up hill.
Problem not so bad going down hill but still being driven like an idiot.
Driving along (No Tacho), when higher revs are used the power starts to drop off quite suddenly then really cuts back on power. Whilst it's doing this it chucks a load of propper black smoke out from the rear.
Injectors have been pot tested - Okay.
Pump timing bang on .8mm lift@TDC.
Cam timing bob on.
I connected a boost gauge inline just to see whats happening, as you accelerate the boost gradually rises as you would expect, just before power drops the boost pressure seems to be in the region of .8-.9 bar, hard to tell for dodging padestrians and learner drivers...
Then, when power starts to drop, boost drops off to almost zero, smoke!

Checked inlet manifold, pipework for leaks, non found.
Now I can't decide if its the pump thats doing something weird or the wastegate is leaking by.
Going to get turbo checked out in next few days, just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the matter.
Simon.

If this car has a K03 turbo, check the wastegate change over valve. Pull the smaller of the 2 hoses off the wastegate and go for a drive. If that fixes it, check the switch on the top of the pump. The switch should be closed (on) when the throttle lever is above an idle and off when at idle position.

aaarrgh, disconected!
long post lost! had to log in again!
aaarrrgh.
K14 turbo
0 460 494 286 pump, this has no switches.
No changeover valve either.
Engine is in a T3 (Vanagon to you lot!)

Pump has extra solenoid to advance timing on cold starts, which is disconnected, but makes no difference connected or disconnected to the problem.

Simon.

It couldn't be the fuel filter could it?  I know that's a simplistic possibility but it fits the symtoms I had with a filter that was cloged on my TDI.  I first noticed the problem in the mountains on a drive home.  It would hardly run at higher revs, especially up hilll. Lot's of black smoke.  I could back off the throttle and the power would come back.  In the flats the problem wasn't as bad.  Changed the filter and the problem went away.  Turned out I had contaminated fuel.  After running through several filters and driving to the red on the fuel gage, I cleared the problem.

Problem sorted, I think.
Removed turbo and took it to a turbo specialist who stripped it.
Found that the wastegate actuator was siezed solid.
Actuator had to be heated to remove it from it's housing.
Turbo is now being rebuilt.
I'll post back if this cures it, usefull to know.
Engine came from a scrap yard, probably been stood for a while and siezed then.

my car has just about the same problem.  Once RPM's hit 3k its smoke time!!! and no power...  Guess I'll have to check the fuel filter and wastegate :(

Van rebuilt and road tested today.
Totally different vehicle! I suppose the amount of boost it had should have given me a clue!
Runs fine now, 'bout .6 bar boost.
Managed to get fuel screw out a little to liven things up, not much, just enough for a small difference.
All is goo.
Cheers for pointers, just thought I would finish this thread with a happy ending.
