***UPDATE***
I went and examined the car closely today, trying to figure out what the deal was with the transmission. It turns out it has a GOOD TRANSMISSION in it, a 4-speed. All that happened was that part of the linkage got bent in the accident, so that putting it in reverse actually puts it into first and vice versa, and all other gears are inaccessible. However the trans itself is just fine, and is up for sale.
Also, did some more poking around the interior. First of all, it has about 170,000 miles on it. Second, the cluster is in great shape, as is the steering wheel, passenger seat, and back seat, but the rear parcel tray is not too nice and was cut for speakers, the driver's seat has some seams that are coming apart (could be redone), and the dashboard does have a little more cracking and fading than I initially thought--still not bad for an older VW but not something you'd want to use for a restoration. It, like the rest of the interior, is red.
Let me know if you need anything or want to DRIVE the whole car away!
