Ok, 1.6td toasted, now what?
« on: October 18, 2008, 04:05:05 pm »
I got a good deal on a 92 EcoDiesel.....a really good deal, worth rebuilding the engine for.

I pulled the valve cover tonight, and found that the plastic baffle had melted over the cam/caps/and started to run down the oil returns. Upon further inspection I noticed the water necks were also melted. The front one, which was off the car when I purchased it, was found in a parts box, melted really bad also.

So I know the head has to be pulled and rebuilt. The bottem has 230xxx miles on it, should I consider buying a german import 1.9?

I really want some diesel performance getting 35mpg, rather than slow and 50mpg.

Thanks in Advance for any Suggestions!

go big if you have the money.  the 1.9 will give you more power.  rebuilding the 1.6 will be cheaper, but you will need to find a true TD pump, and most likely have it rebuilt anyway.

Get one from Canada or from Duane, should be cheaper then Germany but who knows. You could try the dealer too if your pockets are deep

Yeah, I am leaning towards a motor swap than a rebuild. It is about time, not ability or money. My wife found the car, now she is regretting it....

Duane, can you source me a 1.9td from Canada? Ebay is over priced.
I can't spend 2500.00 on a 3,000.00 car unless I keep it forever.

I have to figure out a cost effective way to get this thing back on the road quick.

Any links to motors are appreciated!
