GL5 is not the right oil.  It designed to work in differentials, and has stuff that will eat the brass syncro rings in your gear box.

You need GL4

There are others out there but you could try Redline MTL: http://www.redlineoil.com/products_gearlubricants.asp?categoryID=7

or go to a VW dealer and by their manual transmission oil.

some people say good about royal purple and others dont say so good... redline seems to have an all around good rep though.  i think royal purple might be okay for transmissions, but i've heard some people say that you get better mileage because the oil thins out and gives less protection, but they also have this synerlec stuff (pretty much just moly from what i hear) to help lube everything up.

If in the UK, Redline is harder to find. But Halfrauds sell Castrol SMX or was it SMS?) synthetic, which is GL4 and improves the box loads. A weighted shift linkage from the MK3 (friendly scrappy)  fits the Mk2 in a couple of minutes and improves the shift lots too. Until some time when the poxy crownwheel rivets will say "Hi there!"

I looked last night as I though I was running Redline in my trans, turns out I had 2 empty Mobile 1 bottle where I thought the Redline bottles were.
