Noob with new Eco Project

I found a rust free EcoDiesel under a rock last week. I am going to drag it home a see what is going on with it.

Few things that I know:
It over heated slightly. I the guy was driving it, allowed it to cool, drove some more, turned it off, and then it wouldn't start. It has been sitting over a year now.

Anyone have tips, pointers on troubleshooting this poor guy? I have quite a bit of mechanical knowledge and can do anything that needs to be done, myself(with standard tools)

Guess I will start with fuel. I already got it to turn over before committing to buy it.

well if the coolant was allowed to boil over, then the motor is possibly wrecked (well not totally, but it will need to have the head removed & checked, and that is sort of a big job)... if the coolant was still at full, then there is great hope for this motor.

some people are a bit clueless "hey what is that green-ish liquid leaking from my car???"

I have already ordered a complete top end kit with head gasket and headbolts...thinking I should have went with ARP stud kit though. Plans are for more boost & CNG/propane inj.

Do you happen to know what these put down for TQ? (stock)

Thanks Duane,  I found it at that EcoDiesel Geocities.com website.

Horsepower (SAE net): 59 hp @ 4,500 rpm
Maximum torque: 81 lb-ft @ 2,400 rpm

interior is decent. Carpet needs to be replaced. Seats are nice. dash has some small cracks by the defrost vents.

I am excited to get this thing running! Found a new OE waterneck in the parts box that came with.

Cleaning/Prep starts tomorrow.  :D

Ah yes: "Tornado Pink" I love that color. Believe it or not, some medium-heavy compound (I like Turtle wax polymer in the bottle), followed by a finer polish, then some carnauba wax, that paint will look AMAZING. I've got the same color (LY3D) on y 89 GLI. It looked as bad (or worse) when I got it. But that combination of compound, polish, then wax added 15 MPH when sitting. I think that's why VW painted alot of the diesels Tornado red during those years. They were slow as ***, so they had to at least make them LOOK sporty.

As for the motor: those ECO motors are stout. Assuming the HG is not blown, you're good for at least 300k before you'll need to look at head work. The bottom ends are pretty bomb-proof, assuming the rings dont' get cooked.

You scored a really nice one for sure. Keep er on the road.

P.S. Before you even THINK of drving it, be sure to test the fan motor setup. The ECO had a 3-speed fan fan setup that's a bit complex (in comparison to the all the other 1.6 diesels).

Be sure to pull the plug off the fan switch, figure out which is the lad, and which are not, then bridge a hot wire from the battery to the 2 non-hot leads. The fan should come on at 2 different speeds. The 3rd speed is for the AC/Defrost when engaged. If the fan does not work, then you're in for a treat. That car uses a special fan motor that only the 1991-1992 ECOdiesel and the Corrado VR6 used. Most catalogs don't list them. You'll have to search them by part number off the motor. Either way, they ain't cheap ($300-500 new).

follow his advice!!! seeing as how your car has a/c these fans do fail!  later 2 fan units are the way to go.

QuantumTD and jtanguay - I really appreciate the input. These are the kind of things that no one would ever know to search for.

BTW- I know there is a ton of negative talk surrounding emiata,dieselvw, etc.  but I would rather buy from him than Advance or autozone.
I really laughed at the guy crying about his universal turbo not fitting. What do these guys expect anyway? I'll buy the universal turbo for 300.00, make my own manifold and run 25psi. I have used these on Honda's before. Not bad for the money.
After really analyzing his pics, I can pretty much bet my last dollar that his stuff comes from China, where they are still making the MK2. Do I care? No. It is a foreign car, and I try to buy U.S. when I can.  I just ordered a Hub from MJM AutoHaus, it was from a German company, but was made in China.
I repaired a 4500.00 NEC HD Projector at my work on Friday. Looking at the circuit boards, they all said made in china. One even had a Sony Chip on it.


After I get all of the bugs werked out of this Eco, And get some new wheels/tires. I am definitely getting the power window kit.

That fan motor is the wrong one. The ECO motor is much bigger, and has a pulley on the blade to run the dummy fan.

If you find you need a motor, send me a PM. I'll provide the part number. The only place I've seen them for sale is thru IMC parts.

well you guys i own a Harley Davidson and it has parts made in japan !
i was disappointed ! the only thing that i know is american made is my rabbit pickup! and i consider that perfected in my garage!
the only thing i consider american made is if i made it myself! i don't care what a tag or label says! i believe in my self     :roll:
