I have an MF shortblock that just got rebuilt, and the builder called for a 2-notch head gasket. I measured protrusion with a straight edge and some feeler gauges and it seems to be right in the middle of the range for a 2-notch gasket, according to the Bentley manual, so all is fine up to this point. Things get a little confusing now, because the Bentley says a 2-notch gasket is 1.50mm thick. The part numbers I've seen for 2-notch hydro block head gaskets are 1.57mm. That's a pretty big difference. Can anyone explain? Could it be because the Bentley spec is for a non-metal gasket and I'm looking at metal gaskets?
Just to complicate things more, the gasket I have is for a TDI, and it is a 2-notch, but it's 1.53mm. I'm splitting the difference so I should be fine, right? All the holes line up, and I drilled the "steam holes" so it seems like it'll be fine. The only other difference from an IDI gasket is that there are a couple little tabs that stick out which don't seem to serve much purpose.
The head going on the motor is an AAZ head if that influences any of the above. I didn't think so, since 1.6 and 1.9 gaskets are the same thickness.
