Finished my 1.9 na install today but...

Just got what was a 1.9 l industrial na to replace the 1.7 i had in my transporter. Replaced the 8mm [!] head with a 10mm. Doesn't seem to have more torque but certainly wants to rev like crazy, easily pulls to 6000. Problem is the smoke. At medium to hard throttle there is quite a bit of grey/black smoke. Much quieter, but pretty sure timing set at 1mm [i timed it on the stand and marked the pulley, but after the install it doesn't quite match the flywheel mark]. It may be that the injectors are wrong for what is now a vehicle motor, or timing is not advanced enough, but what i think is really wrong is the intake. The only thing i had to use was a 1.6 na intake which i welded and match ported to the head, but i wonder if the inlet runners are just too small. Other wise i don't know what to use . I don't even think a 1Y intake would work due to the larger IP head pushing all that extra fuel and anyways apparently they are such a tight fit i would have the bash out or cut the body ,which i refuse to do. Anybody have any suggestions as to what i can use for the intake? Or can somebody fab up a custom with the turbo intake that came with the motor.

Why did you go with a 10mm head instead of the 8mm?

The 8mm is for the industrial motor. Isn't everyone replacing their IP heads with bigger ones? As this is a 1990 transporter -you know- a brick, and it has the shortest R&P in the world: 5.5 to 1, 90 kms equals 3600 rpms. All i wanted was enough torque to use the 4.86 R&P i have sitting on the shelf so i can at least cruise at 100 kph and not slow to a crawl at every big hill. Our average speed this past august to New Brunswick was 78 kph ! The ADG code motor has only 90 ft/lbs of torque and is only meant to rev to 3000 rpm,and a 1Y motor which has a 9mm head has 100 ft/lbs , so i would figure putting on a 10mm would get me another 10-20 ft/lbs and maybe 7-20 HP . Comparing to the 1.7 l i took out i would figure i have about another 10-15 HP, just by virtue that it's turning so much more rpm. But seat of the pants is [are ?] telling that torque isn't any or much more than what i had. I'm sure that is a function of not quite right combustion/fueling.

try retarding the timing. Sounds like the timing is advanced and it's got power which is nice but if you don't want that smoke try turning it back a little bit? like by 0.05 at a time or something?

Okay i'll try that too. My pump rebuilder guy mentioned that also but he said to advance it. The motor is ssooo much quieter than the 1.7 which had some real marbling . So much so that I was wondering if that was set too high. I think for my own interest, i will check it before i take the pump off. Can i asuume that advance = HP and retarding = torque just like cam adjustments on a gasser ?

I case anybody cares- Got it running nice. First tried it without any intake manifold at all [!!] in case it was an issue with lack of air, made no difference, next tried sligthly retarding the pump, made it worse,to the point of it backfiring, next switched to the injectors that were in my 1.7 l in case the 1.9 had special stationary motor ones-no difference, reset the pump to where it was originally. Finally played with the throttle postition on the governor and fuel screw -voila- running perfect, Tons more torque, little smoke, revving like crazy. Now just to fix my tach to match the later style alternator.

Nice, you'll have to post some pics when you have a chance and give us a long term report on how it's doing. I've been playing around with the idea of putting either a 1.6L or 1.9L TD into a Westfalia in the future so I'm interested on your insight into the project.

I have all the parts to install a diesel into vanagon if you are thinking about it. I bought it all for a customer who has bailed on me. I also havethe 1.7l that i took out which would be perfect to turbocharge.

Thanks caveman, but I've got too many irons in the fire at this time to even think about taking on a major engine swap project.

I had my 10mm head timed to 1.05mm and it was way to much.I backed it off quite a bit.It was loud as heck!I dont know what im running know as i was told stock settings are no good(with 10mm ,sharper injection).Im backed off quite a bit maybe below.95mm

It was 6 o C [about45 F i think] when i went out to drive to work this morning . Was harder to start then yesterday. If my setting was right at first ,it should have been 1 mm. Since playing yesterday with it i would think it is now about .95 mm . I will reset it to where it was. I'm sure it will be better back where it was. I also need someone to follow me to fine tune the fuel. My tailpipe has cooked and so i cut it down so it wouldn't look so crappy, but now i can't see as well what's going on. It's the original muffler from 1990 ! Not reaaly suprising since we used to service taxis [remember when VW had a 2 year/unlimited milage warranty] and they would be on their 2nd motor, and 3rd transmission ,but still had all the original exhaust system.
