Author Topic: Anyone know anything about intermittant lifter ticking? (Read 6640 times)

In the city rarely does it, maybe more on hotter days. And usually always after a highway drive. oil pump has 350,000 on it if its the original with the body, and so are the lifters (although not 100% sure).
So should i replace lifters or does it sound like more of an oil pump related thing. Im using 15W-40 semi-synth oil, but my previous regular oil did same thing.

After about 100K on the odometer those hydro lifters are pretty much done in and the pumps due for replacement with 350K on it.
TRW makes a replacement lifter that`s cheaper than the stock item(I got the part # here somewhere,...) and I`d swap in the 36MM gear pump, it does a good job of feeding the hydro lifters even in the winter weather here(-35C at times),

Sometimes the lifters and tiny oil galleries can get some sludge in them, so it can be useful to put 1/2-1 qt of ATF in there, and run it up to temperature, then do an oil change.

However, with that many miles, I would just change out the oil pump and lifters. I have had them make noise at 100k or less.

thanks for the advice, I'd like to know the cost of those TRW lifters, I can get OEM lifters for $10-12 each @ VM Autohaus. What model vw is the 36mm pump out of?

ok so i picked up INA lifters, heard they were lighter aswell on vwvortex.
They were the only ones they carried $13 each.
only place around here that had TRW lifters was lordco, and retail for those is $25 each

I'll wait with the pump for now cuz it is $115 for the stock one, and surprisingly the 36mm is only $68.
Please let me know if you fnd the part number, because the parts guy said it is from a 2.0 8v engine. and confirm that the shaft is the same length, or does it need modding?
what are symptoms of a tired oil pump anyway?

The oil pump is just a gear type pump. If you have a Bentley it gives you the spec's on what to look for in an oil pumps serviceability. Easy to check. But for the cost it is just as easy to replace. Best bet is to call up the local dealer and have them give you the proper part number for your engines oil pump. Then check it out online. I'm running with Zero oil pressure after warm up. Yep your read that right Zero, nothing, that is the reading I get at the head at operating temp, with a good mechanical gage. But if you take the cam cover off the head is soaked and it ran out of the head and puddled in my drive when I warmed it up after replacing the head gasket, I didn't tighten down the cam cover because I was just going to take it back off again to torque the head bolts after warm up. So I'm getting oil flow, just no pressure and this is on a complete engine rebuild with all new bearings to include the intermediate shaft bearings. Go figure.

so i guess your replacing your pump arent u?
I also have a gauge which is not hooked up yet because i donno where to put the sending unit, where is yours located Rat!?

Also i know which pump i need, the only reason i brought up the 36mm pump is because i was told it produces more pressure, good or bad, i donno about this. Any input would be appreciated!

I've replaced my pump with a new one which is the 36mm pump and still no pressure. So it is getting run till it goes. As for oil pressue sender port, I have mine hooked up on the drivers side of the head. I have oil pressure at the oil filter, I get 22psi at highway speeds. Like I said I have plenty of oil flow/volume, just no pressure.

hmm don't u want it as close to the oil pump as possible. I was thinking of installing mine behind the turbo feed line where the stock oil pressure swithc is, but then where would i put the switch?
Another thing, where would you install an oil temperature sending unit?

Gear chatter, slop, etc.
I just remembered though that there`s a difference in the turbo-pump and all the rest(the shaft is splined differently on the turbo pump) and there`s a post below dealing with it.
Anyone know more about this??

Replacing your oil pump isn;t going to give you sufficient oil pressure for those lifters until you replace your intermediate shaft races, if theya re the stock ones with350xxxkms on them they are more than done, check your oil pressure, cause you will just toast those lifters again if those are stock races.

ok well if i knew where to install the oil pressure sending unit i'd be all set!
what are normal pressures supposed to be at, at operating temps.

hmmm... how bad is lifter ticking? How bad can it damage the engine?

I doubt it'll do any damage to the engine. Maybe in the long run cam lobes will wear improperly. It just worls like a solid lifter with to much clearance.
