New 1.6TD IP only pumping out of two holes.
« on: July 26, 2008, 12:39:54 pm »
I am just trying to fire an engine for the first time that has been sitting around for probably at least 5 years. It is a newly rebuilt 1984 1.6TD that has never been ran since the rebuilt. The IP appears to have been rebuilt. I cracked the injector lines at the injectors. I am getting fuel at #2 and #4 but not #1 or #3. I've cranked on it for probably 2 to 3 minutes total by now. I also blead the air out of the fuel filter and have been using an auxillary 5 psi electric pump between the tank and the filters. Is there likely something wrong with this pump from sitting? If so, will it self correct or do I need to disassemble it?

Well the injectors could be stuck, the delivery valves could be stuck.

Are you talking about fuel coming right out of the pump?
As in the lines are not bolted on?

If it was sitting dry you are going to need to reseal it again. Sorry..

Injector pump

If it were mine, I would mix some auto transmission fluid, diesel fuel and power service, about 1/3-1/3-1/3.  Mix-up at least a quart.  Remove the return line on the pump (17 mm hex) and add directly to the pump.

Make sure it is very clean.

Keep turning over the pump.......... its most likely going to take more than two or three minutes of cranking.

I started a 1.6 NA that had been sitting for three years that had over 200k miles on the meter.  It took almost two hours of boosting and priming the pump with the mix I set forth above.

Then after the engine fired, it sputtered and spit for quite some time.  Once it warmed up and leveled off, I rev it up several times.

Ran fine............ of course the fuel in the tank was old too!

1984 Vanagon (ALH TDI, 11k mile 33 day road trip to Alaska pulling a popup camper, 26 mpg, 2016 31 days to Alaska and return) Typical MPGs 32-36

I agree only I use 1/3 power service, 1/3 diesel fuel and 1/3 lemon juice.         (just kidding)

Actually you probably just need to bleed it more.

The plunger that pushes fuel is the same for all 4 cylinders.  The cam plate (in the injection pump) has 4 lobes but all four lobes are used for each cylinder.  It almost has to be air.

You can remove the delivery valves and clean them, if more bleeding doesn't work. Though I have trouble believing that 135 bar wouldn't push through most minor crud and filth.  It almost has to be air.

Blockage in injection pump to the delivery valves??  Seems like 135 bar would push through that as well.  Maybe some crack in the IP bleeding off pressure those two cylinders?

Acutally I wonder what would happen if there was SOLID blockage.  Would the plunger stroke at all?  Would the IP even be able to turn?  Would it just knock the head off the back of the IP?  Where would all that pressure go?  Would it just destroy the plunger?

Thank you for the help. I decided to just try and start it on two cylinders. I lit the GP's for a 4 or 5 seconds and cranked on it. It sputtered and started. After a few seconds the other two cylinders came on line and it seems to be OK except that the alternator siezed.

so the pump was stored dry...  hopefully no rust on the inside...
