My bad. These cars are getting so old and so many people have swapped transmissions that it can be hard to recollect what they came with every time

Just to clear somethings up
It's an 87 that I imported from Germany
It came stock with the 1.6na diesel engine and tranny
The engine in it is a 1.9TD with 75,000KM

Now the big question where do I find the tranny code to compare numbers. I was looking at the tables you sent me to and if it's the last Diesel tranny it has a 5.50 final would going to a 4.83 really make that much difference.
So far the 1.9TD has not been modified and would any of the mods on this site(Fuel screws)overcome any drawbacks to this switch.

It should be in the same place as others, on the bottom of the bell housing of the transaxle.

That pic is for an 020 trans. Definitely not Vanagon/t3.

IIRC the code is on the drivers side directly below the reverse light switch housing.

If it is the 5.50 final drive then pretty much any other box is going to make a big difference!

Actually looking at the chart again I think it's the 84.8 and up 1.6na 5.83 tranny; code ABF. I haven't been able to read the tranny code (needs cleaning) but it was a stock 87 1.6na and matching tranny.
What would then different final drive and gearing from a gas 87 vanagon do the top end currently 110KPM
1st gear 20KPH
2nd gear 40KPH
3rd gear 65KPH
