Good old google

VW Golf 91
Hello, i'm new around here, I have a VW Golf MK3 from 1991 with AAZ motor and i'm from Portugal.

I have some mods on my AAZ like a Garrett T2 original from 1.9l Golf Mk3 with 1bar pression, Intercooler from Audi A4 TDI AFN 110hp, increase of fuel, no catalisator, pin of LDA 1.6 TD.

I like the power of him right now but I guess maybe he can produce more. One thing that is bothering me is that in 5gear when achieves 3600rpm the car begin to maintain the power and don't have enough power to pass the 4000rpm on straigh line  It seems it misses something and the car begin to smoke black and not to increase the speed.
What could be working wrong on the pomp of my AAZ?

Thank you and hope to learn a lot with you guys!

carrizog60
not enough boost to clear diesel soot

welcome

VW Golf 91

ah..so what you suggest? more pressure on turbo?

Thanks for the welcome CGP mate

VW Golf 91

no more opinions??

jtanguay
thats a pretty dinky turbo. i'd say garrett T3 for your application, although the T2 does spool nice down low, it lacks up top. you could try increasing the boost pressure as stated above. for a quick test you can bock the wastegate line and use your foot the manage the boost and keep an eye on the smoke. keep boost below 18 psi if you can as a T2 isn't as robust as the T3 (some guys running 30+ psi on them)

VW Golf 91
T2 is nice on low but when my AAZ achieved 3000rpm the turbo give another kick..like my old K24 did but with no low power! This kick is better feeled on 3 and 4 gear passing the 3000rpm. But that second kick is not to hard like the K24 but is a pretty good kick help

VW Golf 91
What do you say about pump issue? 1.6GTD pump on a AAZ or only the head of the 1.6 on a 1.9 pump?

gigaz2
9mm plunger on 1.9 camplate, governor mod done to the pump.
K24 with welded wastegate.

pressure and EGT gauge are compulsory!
at least pressure, but prepare to melt things

and welcome

VW Golf 91
On what pump is the 9mm plunger? and what is governor mod

gigaz2
on the RA/SB versions of 1.6td, the 80hp versions.

the governor mod is on the diy section, not advisable for first mods.

check "banza"'s project on CGP

VW Golf 91
How many mm have the plunger original from the 1.9 pump? I have a original 1.9 pump on my AAZ but some pieces on the head of the pump are not good as they should be, interior, and maybe i will buy a 1.6 pump and I was woundering to put the head of the 1.6 on the 1.9, is that possible plug&play? And it will give any advantages?

gigaz2
8mm on the JR
9mm on RA/SB
8mm on AAZ (cam disk has more lift)

but you can't know for sure, I just took my JR apart, its a mechanical lifter block and the plunger is 9mm
