84 quantum TD project

I'll post progress here as it happens.

  Details, I got the car for free as it has a bad hole.

  It was kind of a hassle to get the compression tested, one of the fuel lines was stuck on the pump (the 14mm fitting was unscrewing from the pump instead of the 17mm fuel line nut unscrewing from the 14mm fitting) so I had to pull the pump to remove the fuel line and reinstall the pump.

  Also the #3 injector is a bit of a hassle to get out as the LDA is in the way so I made a special tool to remove it,



The square is welded on from the back through a hole,



In use



I'll pull the head tomorrow and see whats up with hole number 4.

Comp test numbers, COLD engine, about 60*F out today

#4 ~10 PSI
#3 320 PSI
#2 340 PSI
#1 345 PSI

  What is normal for a cold engine? I always see hot engine numbers.

  I did run the car for a bit, it was shaking quite a bit :lol:  but there was no exhaust or pressure in the coolant reservoir so I'm thinking its a burnt valve, but maybe a holed piston. The car broke down while running WOT up 3 miles of %10 grade, the PO did that 2 times a day 5 days a week for 2 years till the car broke, stock fueling so it seems like it shouldn't have been able to "kill itself" but ~4 minutes of WOT is quite a bit of heat as well, he did say when it happened there was coolant all over under the hood but he couldn't tell where it came from, but the temp gauge on the dash never climber at all. I have yet to see any coolant leaking, but that does really point to bad head gasket.

Did the 84 TDs come with solid lifter heads or hydraulic?

more than likely solid.
look for 2 humps in the front of the cylinder head if only one big one in the center you should have a solid lifter head. If you have 2 a smaller one to the left of the bigger one then should be a hydro.

i thought the limit for hyd and mech heads was 86 his 84 should be mech

If itīs original engine, itīll be mech. Check the humps from block, some aftermarket mech heads have both humps.

  The humps are on the side of the block facing the injector pump, right?

  Assuming it is a mech head (I'm pretty sure it is all original) can I still use a 1.9 TD metal head hasket? On mikew's website he lists the 1.9 HG as though it only fits the hydraulic heads, can it be modified to fit a 1.6 mech head?

   This is the hump, right? So it is a solid lifter head.

  So can I use a metal 1.9 HG with the solid lifter head? Are they available in different thicknesses like the normal HGs? Can the metal HG be modified to work on a solid lifter head?

  On myke_w's website it lists the metal HG as,

1.6/1.9 Metal Headgasket – Reinz/Elring - (hyd) -(specify # of notches) = $ 50

I got the head off, the down pipe nuts were a PITA, I had to use almost 2 beers to get them off :evil:

 The good news, none.

  The bad news, the pre-cup fell out of the head and had been wallowing out the hole in the head for who knows how long, it wore a decent bit of piston off, and it crumbled away a bit of the top edge of the cylinder and those specs of cast iron lodged in the rings and the cylinder wall is decently scored so it'll need at least 1st oversized pistons and a new head, this one is certainly not rebuildable.

  The turbo has an odd extra line from the waste gate actuator to the non pressure side of the comp housing, I'm not sure what thats for,



  Its a garret, I think a T3, no garret part number, just this plate



  The turbo is in very good shape, spins freely and hardly ant play at all.

  I'll get the block out soon, I need to call some machine shops.

  A new head will run about $575...

  2 of the other precups were slightly loose, but hadn't caused any damage.

  How often do the precups come loose and wreck stuff?

Also, a nice rebuilt head shouldn't be terribly expensive..

Looks like you'll need pretty much a complete rebuild of course, but it's worth it if you like the car enough

  Aluminum head rebuilders in Portland Oregon quoted me $575 for a new head, but if someone here sells them I'd rather spend my money here.

  The car is in such good shape that it would be a real shame to not rebuild the engine, so, the money will be spent

  Cool, it wouldn't have to be too fast as I still need to find a machine shop around here for the bottom end.
