Pretty interesting...

Lombordini also of course has variants of other aircooled diesels in two cylinder and 3 cylinder form.... close to 50hp and just over 100nm of torque.

Consider the possibilities for the ole' aircooleds out there...without the need to go to a watercooled engine...

Not screamers of course...but with fuel the way it is...
Though...a nice little turbo could help things out as well

just thought it was an interesting read. The Lambordini site is really interesting too.

my grandfather has a diesel Lombardini on his tractor, watercooled, 3 cylinder, IP is an inline one.

when you push the throttle too much it spews liquid diesel from the exaust

(and lifts the front of the 2tonne beast in the process )

not particularly good emissions wise.

there are def. refinements that could be made...we're not thinking too much on the emissions here...could be fun. The idea is interesting enough..

My uncle has a generator with one of their engines in it. He seems to think it works great. Just a 5kw generator for a backup in case there is no sun or wind for a week.

He uses it to weld for the most part or load equalize his battery bank as required.

Just heard from the guy who is in charge of the auction of the car...

His response to my question on mpg...

According to the consignor it get around 40 to 45MPG.

40-45 mpg on a 2 cyl engine??? that seems a bit low.. surely a 1.6TD installed in there should net at LEAST 40 mpg and be wayyyy faster. maybe they're just driving it way past its efficiency range? screaming on the highway? :lol:

well...if you think about it. They just "installed" the diesel engine. There was no attention paid to the tranny, etc. So, with that aircooled 4speed tranny...she would be screaming. I'm suprised of the mileage they are getting given that fact...

1.6 TD would be nice...but its even more cool in this aspect that they were able to retain the character of the car and not have to add the additional weight, etc. that the watercooled counterpart would involve. If I ever thought of such a thing, aircooled is def. the route I'd go. Converted aircooleds to watercooleds are "odd" to say the least in my book.

Look at the bay bus...still produced in Brazil....but now as a watercooled...just doesn't seem right.

Rethinking/regearing the tranny would make a huge difference in this case.

I'm still hoping Jake Raby is serious about his aircooled VW boxer diesel engine idea.

With MPG figures, since that engine is only 25-ish hp, I'm sure they probably have to drive it pedal to the metal all the time just to get it to go anywhere- can't be good for efficiency.

def. not the most efficient route...but cool that it was done none the less.

JAKE is AWESOME. I'm still waiting on the final production run of his TYPIV style header system for the late model bus. I keep putting off buying another CRAP system from EMPI or (the once good parts called EMPI) because of it. I've talked with him many times...

Hadn't heard about his diesel ideas... DI would def. be easier than IDI on the motors we have...hmm...

thing is you only need HP for quick acceleration. low hp is all you need to keep moving at speed.

i've been thinking of getting a few large capacitors to store some 'juice' for those quick acceleration moments. wondering how good it would be considering it might take anywhere from 10 seconds to 1 minute to charge the capacitors??? best thing is that capacitors can hold their charge for a few hours to a few days

could replace the alternator with a generator, that way it can serve to recharge the system, and provide those 'quick' spurts of energy.

either way you do it, it would be an awesome hybrid! 80 mpg

I've heard similar discussions about converting current cars to more of a "hybrid" status via the use of water, building capacitors, etc. I haven't even looked into it any farther...but someone at work was talking about it today. Sounded interested....and def wasn't "hydrogen fuel cells", its a hydrogen generator.
