So has anyone ACTUALLY done this and recorded before and after MPG difference's if any?

on my old '86 jetta with mech lifters i was able to achieve 1000+km's (about 52mpg

but the gears were much longer) on the same size tank as my '92 jetta. my '92 jetta rarely sees even 700km's per tank (39mpg ). mostly because of the way i drive though . my guess is that the p/s pump really robs the top end of these motors. down low they probably won't affect much. the difference in steering isn't really that much either.
You need a rack, tie rods for a manual rack, and the steering shaft u-joint and boot for a manual. Other than that the columns are the same.
There are some manual u-joints and boots for sale in the vortex,

hmmm for that price i might just look at a junkyard.. $70 + $160 for the rack and then another $40 for the tie rod assemblies....
