Well... sort of depends.
What engine do you want to swap into what vehicle?
I assume since you posted in the IDI forum area that you probably want to swap a diesel into an MKI or MKII?? Threads below will get you started.
Any one done gas to diesel?

87 jetta and 1.9 non turbo like what came in it. and my wife isnt patient, guess i lose. also is the tranny the same as a gas?

Here is my post on another website for my conversion that isn't done yet. The glow plug and fuel pump were easy to re-do.

most of the trannys are the same as gassers, i would just put in the tallest one u can get your hands on, diesels have such a short power range, maybe like say 1000rpm-4000rpm, thats only 3k worth of usable power, long gears help it feel more like a gas car. since u can wind them out better.

From what I've been told any 4 cyl inline, liquid cooled VW engine, diesel or gas, will bolt to any 4 cyl trans, up to about '06 or so. The main things you need are a glow plug relay, which you can operate with a momentary switch, and a spin on fuel filter. Hook a wire to the IP that goes hot when the key is turned. I think that's about it.
