How do I hook up the tach?
« on: May 18, 2008, 07:51:37 am »
I have come across a tachometer and need to swap it in my car.  I have done some searching and found little about actually running a wire from the W terminal to the tach in the cluster.  What kind of pick up wire should I run and how does it fit into the cluster?  Any help would be great!  Thanks!

any kind of insulated wire, its just a signal, no current.

your tachometer is a diesel one right? aftermarket stuff is 99% gas, and they don't work with W signal.

even so you can always improvise an pickup, optical or Hall effect.

Here's the chart you need to determine what cluster pin goes to the W terminal:

And yeah... it needs to be a diesel tach (only goes to 5.5K).  If it goes to 7K it's a gasser tach and won't work directly... lots and lots of data here and at www.vwdieselparts.com on options.
