difficulty starting my 1.6 N/A
« on: May 16, 2008, 04:00:45 pm »
Just recently started having trouble with my Jetta Starting. It runs great once it is running. If it's been running recently it will start right up. If it sits over night it takes forever to start. Seems like allot of black smoke while cranking. Someone told me they thought My fuel system might be losing prime? I tried changing the fuel filter the first day this happened, and it started right up after the filter change. But the next morning was a different story. Any ideas? Thanks,

Danny

your starter could be turning over too slow, Glow plugs, timing, compression, pump loosing prime etc

Any leaks on the pump? Any air going into the pump when it's running? Any air running out of the pump when you turn it off?

When the small seal, which surrounds the input shaft of the fuel pump wears (front pump seal), starting becomes annoying just like you have stated. However, usually it is more of a white smoke if memory serves me.
This is one way the pump loses the prime. And this will just drive you nuts....plus you will learn to rebuild your own starter!!!!
A specific seal puller makes the job a breeze. Otherwise, you've go to use sheet metal screws, etc. and make sure NOT to damage the shaft or housing of the pump. If you still have the original seal.....man, they come out hard!!!!!!!
The mask and the shot(s) are actually an IQ test. If you are wearing or circulating, you just failed the test. I can't feel sorry for you.

there should almost be something in the FAQ about hard starting... and then have a disclaimer at the top because it seems like the board gets cluttered with these types of posts.  some kind of troubleshooting guide where people can post their tips/solutions etc.  there's only a small list of things that can stop these "bulletproof" engines, mainly because there is no complex wiring/sensors.

There could almost be one of those flowcharts created for this.

my 2 cents
