My 86 Golf has what looks like a button under the accelerator pedal. It's not the high beams either. Does anyone know what this could be? I thought it was the cruise control but if it is how do you work it with out taking your foot off the pedal?

If you are talking about the thick black plastic piece it is a pedal stop

its on the signal arm.  near the end theres a switch to turn it on/off and i believe resume.  the end button is pressed once you've reached the speed you want (and the cruise button has to be set to on at this point)  it should work unless theres a vacuum leak somewhere in the system.
