I drove another 100 plus miles today and noticed another couple of things
1. It rained and no real moisture contamination in the filter area- I don't know if it sucks so hard it dries it or what, but the pvc on the inside didn't look dirty or splashed like I figured it would
2. The RPM's hang for awhile. I used to push the clutch in and the car would drop almost immeadiately to idle, now it will come down nice and slow...the faster in MPH the slower the RPMs fall. Maybe the ram air effect??? I think it helps in the upshifting on hills

I still recommed doing this. I can't wait to get my gasket set and do the gov mod. I think it will help even more

The rpm hangs because you turned the fuel screw in. You only get some much adjustment just turning the screw before the rpms hang.

you can set the residual screw so the rpm's don't hang.

I turned it back down today, but it still hangs. Not like a hang as much as it just comes down noticably slower than before. It doesn't smoke at all now.

Which screw is considered the residual fuel screw?

not the idle screw-top left if looking from timing belt
not the wot screw-top right if looking from timing belt
the one on top right in the middle---very touchy
at least that is the way it was discribed to me.

His name was Bob Ross definately from PBS. The dude ruled. I remember him from when I was a kid painting his "happy little trees...get out the fan brush and some yellow ochre and add some highlights to your happy little landscape" And he has probably the best afro of a real person I can think of. There is a guy from the cleaveland cavs that is close and maybe sideshow bob off of the simpsons cartoon

Residual fuel screw is the top left one when looking at the pump from the belt side, max fuel is in the middle, with the larger locknut. Idle is on the engine side of the pump, a long screw going down to the bottom of the pump.

Sticky levers on top of the pump can cause the RPMs to drop slowly.
Spray the springs with lube and see if they move smoother.
Another thing that can cause the RPMs to drop slowly is injectors that are spraying funny.

The RPM thing I think is a bonus good thing. It doesn't hang I guess as I described earlier, but the RPM's don't fall as rapidly as before. Before maybe back to idle in milliseconds now maybe tenths of a second??? Just enough to be noticed. The best way I could describe it in a similar situation was when my friend put an aftermarket pipe on his 2 stroke quad. The stock pipe his engine would lose RPM's slowly the aftermarket pipe they would stay up longer. It was nice when shifting his quad and similarly the Rabbit I have. It also revs faster than before. I got real interested in this mod when I reved my engine with the arm on the pump and was watching the airbox...it looked almost like the airbox was sucking down, like it wasn't getting enought air. I looked again and saw the size of the filter and then the size of the stock hole at the end of the intake tube. I remembered seeing some stuff in the FAQ section on how to make your 1.6na faster and thought this is the way to go. Tomorrow I will be putting in the 45 degree in place of the 90 but other than that it will stay as is an I LOVE IT!!!

definitely a good mod, the tiny hole is made to make the engine quieter, not to make more power or mileage.

about the moisture; i dont think it will hurt. no water droplets can get through the filter, unless you went through a deep puddle and you sucked in a lot of water. i suppose the main issue would be condensation building up inside when let sit for a while, but isn't any setup prone to that???
i had a cpu cooler setup once with a thermoelectric cooler... it would always develop ice on it, so couldn't put that on my cpu... added a fan for airflow and it never accumulated. worked like a charm but took too much electricity for such a small gain in performance. so the same applies to your situation. the high flow of air is going to restrict the condensation.
