Author Topic: Oil pump interchange? (Read 4997 times)

Okay, so, I'm building a regular little frankenengine of my own, with Fox gas parts, 1.5D parts, 1.6TD and D parts, and even some 1.9TD parts.

The intention is for this thing to go lightly turbocharged, with a K03 providing the boost. With the turbo comes the need for more oil pump volume, which I don't think the stock 1.5D oil pump is capable enough of for my peace of mind.

My question for you folks is this: What oil pumps are interchangeable between engines? I know I can get up to, what, a 36mm gear pump for the 1.6TDs, but would that same pump fit in a 1.5D? Will a stock 1.6TD pump fit in a 1.5D, and be an upgrade? I seem to recall but cannot now find that the spec for gear size on 1.5D engines is only in the upper twenties.

I want to overbuild this thing to the point of utter reliability while putting down a modest 60-65hp, which is more than enough for my purposes. Big oil pump, full synthetic oil, head studs and all new bolts for every bracket and pulley are just the beginnings of this adventure.

I am not 100% sure but Im told when researching this same kinda question

"will my 1.6L td 36mm oil pump go onto my 1.5L N/A block?"

people said yes and it would be a generous upgrade in oil pressures.

Im sure others will chime in to clear this up

There are a couple different oil pumps in the 1.5.
One has the hole through the center of the shaft and the other doesn't.
NAPA got me the wrong one once.
One has a shorter shaft.
The bolts are probably going to be longer for the 36mm, although some A2s had smaller pumps but the castings used the longer bolts.... can't remember the length.

what was this hole for? Doesnt the shaft have a slotted area at the end?

Ive seen two different vac pumps, which are you refuring to?

There is one that has a flat top and one hose, and another thats seems to have a lot more to it...

two different size vac pumps...

I do beleave the bolts on my 36mm diesel oil pump are longer than the ones on my other 20something mm pump(the one with the shorter shaft-gas)

I think that the diaphragm pump also needs it, though just for lubrication of the rod and gear. The Bentley very explicitly states that you can't use a 1.5 gas oil pump on a diesel, and I think that the only difference between them is the presence of that oil hole in the shaft.

Thanks I hadnt noticed that info about the 1.5L gasser oil pump while reading my bentley although I havent bought a diesel version Ive only been reading the mini diesel section in my gasser bentley

I'll need to get my hands on a new bentley I beleave

There is a vacuum pump that gets it's oil from a metal tube, plumbed over from the filter housing,... maybe a '79?

yeah my buddy has a 1.6 GTD motor from europe and it has that little curly Q oil line from the oil filter housing to the vacuum pump. When I first saw it I was like, "what the heck is that?" Never saw one before.

Other than longer bolts, would a 36mm pump fit on a 82 1.6na?

Early diaphragm pumps, I think. My '80 Dasher diesel had an internally oiled pump, the donor Rabbit diesel from an earlier year didn't have a vacuum pump at all, and the QTD parts engine has a rotary type pump.

actually I think the very early 1.5's had a spline drive instead of the tab. (these are probably the ones with curly oil line. The 36mm probably will fit but I would like to look at the mounting surface of each, and BE SURE the drive engages fully !!!

The early 1.5's had the shallow 4 qt oil pan as well.

Are you actually turboing a 1.5 block??

I've been thinking of trying that, as I like the RPM of the 1.5, and most of mine have been more economical than 1.6 or 1.9. I really want a 75 MPG Scirocco or Rabbit, as I can't stand that a Honda insight gets better mileage. I felt a turboed 1.5 (driven very carefully) would be the best bet. (I could be wrong...) :oops:
