Subsonic and vw's on the gulf of mexico. Yeah baby!
« on: February 14, 2008, 04:43:10 pm »
I just wanted to send everyone a quick note to let you all know that I was thinking about you. :P

It was about 82 today on nokomis key in south western florida.  It was 20 degrees and a fresh foot of snow when I left my house.  Ahhhhhh, what a difference a day makes :D

Got a cool photo of some new and old vw action as well.

This is me.

In the parking lot.  The newer one was driven down from Canada on a seven day road trip.  The older one is from conneciticut.

Thanks a lot, last week we hit a low of -54F, now it's about 24F so I'm happy
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Wow! Sounds like my kind of winter! Is that much snow common in Alaska?

Actually if you look close you can see that the parking lot is shoveled, heh, right onto my car. My uncle was shoveling and decided to put it all on the car. You should've seen the looks I got driving down the road like that 8) . It did dent the roof in a bit, nothing permanent though, and it was real cool when it fell off. That pic was took when I was visiting southern AK, I live in central AK and snow fall isn't very good, now we have like 12-18 inches here, we get the cold and when thats past the wind comes up . South about 80 miles is like 5-8 feet of snow usually.

HA! I didn't read that part at first but, I looked at those pictures and said to myself. "Hey!! That is North Jetty Beach on Casey Key in Nokomis!!!"

There is no mistaking it.
That is one of my favorite beaches, I have spent a ton of time there having grown up in Venice / Nokomis (well from 8-20). Nothing better than those Australian Pines for beating the afternoon heat at the height of summer. Later on in High School North Jetty also turned out to be an excellent "Parking" spot.

If you can believe it, at one point the gulf came right up to the trees and there were many rope swings.

Things were allot different 20-30 years ago, Casey Key was considered low brow, "The Poor Mans Water Front" nothing more than tiny cottages and beach shanties along most of it. That is all changed now, they all have been replaced with great big McMansions that are built like tenements, long and thin so they can fit on the beach front lots usually taking up most of of the lot.
More often than not at North Jetty Beach the bikers used to out number the beach goers. I don't know if it's still there but, there used to be a ramshackle bar / bait shack in the back corner of the parking lot along the edge of the opening of the intercoastal, beyond the bait bar in the middle of the channel is "Snake Island". The Island was the summer vacation domain of most of the neighborhood boys, ala "Lord of The Flies" we virtually lived there. At home we were mere boys but, upon swimming the channel to Snake Island, we became Kings!!! :D. Unless they a boat, we were completely inaccessible to parents, they could only stand on the banks and yell over.

Anyway...

Enjoy the beach, the sun, and the relaxation.   I'll wave as I drive to work today. You aren't more than than 30-40 minutes North of me currently.

Hard to believe that I am a mere 10 days from giving up Florida Sunshine, 80F February days, and white sandy beaches for Boston. It's been over 20 years since I spent a day at North Jetty, maybe I should take my daughters before we go, won't be the same without bikers though...

That bait shop is still there.  I can see the island you are talking about.  What will I find if I look out there :)

I dove up and down the keys, everywhere I went it was high rises and gated buildings.  Casey key was the quietest one we found.  More beach, less people.  Couple familys out with small kids, pelicans and dolphins coming in the channel.  I would bring my kids here If I come again.

I go home today at 3pm.  I will have to go drink up the rest of the champagne and OJ with the wife.  I think we will find a hotel on the way to the airport and go pool hopping to freshen up a bit

Ziptar, you should really check out skybus.com for tickets.  It cost me a grand total of 63 bucks for both of our round trip tickets from portsmouth NH to punta gorda.  Thats like 45 min from down town Boston.

I need to go eat some breakfast, grab the booze and hit the beach, daylight is burning 8)

Well.... Lets see.... Maybe the remnants of an old tree fort, a swinging rope, soda cans, backwoods cigar wrappers, empty chewing tobacco pouches and twinkie wrappers. If you can find the right spot and dig a few inches you'll find a black garbage bag protecting the stack of Playboys that Ricky Breeden Stole from His Dad.

Well I made it back to Maine

Have pity on me, I was nursing a sunburn and a nasty hang over the whole flight home  .

Ziptar

I tried to get you some photos of the North Jetty Fish Shack, as soon as I lifted my camera the batteries ran out of juice.   It is run down as hell looking, still serving ice cold beer though.  The Island is still there, no McMansion on it.  Bunch of bikers hanging on the backside of the jetty.  Looked like some of them had swam over with an igloo cooler in tow.  Right before the camera died, I happened to take a look at the people on the island with the camera set at 6X.  No tan lines on her!!!  Damn batteries!!!   It was like something out of a battery commercial

It was sweet there.  You should hit it one more time before you jet.  I would take my kids to the beach there for sure.  Way less crowded, some old people, some familys with small kids, and just one or two of the required blond tan hotties that florida is famous for.  Watched the pelicans dive for fish, dolphins swimming past.  Yeah I like it there.

Oh yeah, I only paid 63.00 bucks for the two sets of round trip tickets to get there from NH.  Skybus.com  Gotta love em.

Thanks for trying to get a pic, perhaps I'll take the kids this next week. One last beach trip. North Jetty is the top of my List maybe #1 now. Siesta Key Beach used to be #1 but, it is way over crowded now.

SkyBus sounds awesome, I'll check them out when we get settled.

Only a week left until we Move....   I can't believe we are doing this.
