Source for BEW/ BRM rebuild parts
« on: February 11, 2008, 01:45:12 pm »
I' trying to put my PD engine back together and I'm looking for BRM rings and BEW bearings.  So far I can only find them through the dealer and even whith my discount rings are $117/cylinder and bearing shells are sold individually at $17/ piece!!!!    Too bad the machine shop chucked the rings when they cleaned and measured the pistons, they only had 10K on them.

Anyone know of an aftermarket source?

total seals should be able to get you a nice set of rings. Bearings if I am not mistaken are the same as the 2.0 and 1.8l gas motors. So you should be able to get rings from any dealer that sells them. Although I am not 100% sure on everything on that. ETKA is a good way to check...

Myke-
I PM'd and emailed you on those parts but haven't heard back.  Is there another way to get a hold of you?  Anyone have ideas?

Can you get the BEW rod bearings as well as the mains and thrust washers?

Anyone know if the BRM and BEW rings cross over?  I can't belive the machine shop chucked them on me, now I can't even take measurements off of them!

If it helps any the part # is 03G198151C for a set... I'd say dealer is your best bet at this point, there's nothing in the aftermarket for anything that new..

I had sourced the rings through the dealer and they are available bit at a cost of $120+ per cylinder.

Here are the BEW and BRM pistons next to each other.  I measured the grooves and they are identical as well as the cylinder bore and piston diameter.  The only obvious difference is the hight of the piston and related position of the top ring groove.  Can anyone see any reason that the BEW rings will not cross over?

I'd say if they fit and are the same shape, you shouldn't have a problem, as long as the BRM rings don't have any weird characteristics.

FYI the BRM part # does not cross to any other vehicle..

I'd give it a shot.. it's a lot of savings money saved if it works.

Do the BEW or ALH PN's cross with eachother or anything else? I remember that the BEW and BRM numbers only have one or two digits difference but I have no idea of what the significance is.

Myke-
I had my machine shop double check my findings and was told that all of the piston groove and bore dimensions are identical between the BEW and BRM.  The shop deals with Hastings rings and were told by Hastings that they show the same part number all the TDI applications.

In any case I want to get the BEW rings and bearings from you.  I'll send you an email as well but wanted to put the word out that I am looking for a total on all the parts to order them up.
