On the subject of Chinese MkIIs...
Great Pics!!! Looks like the Rain Gutters and window Trim are identical to ours, so there is hope I can replace all of mine with new.
On The subject of S.A. MkI's
I think they are RH Drive.
Back when they were still making the Beetle in Mexico there was a company that did "restorations", you could drive your busted and rusted old beetle down to Ole Mejico. When it was time to drive it back across the border it was a shiney new beetle from the floor pan up with the same ID number. It's conceivable, You could ship your caddy to S.A. for a "Safari" and have it come back all newish. Shipping cost make that prohibitive.
Importing a whole car is impossible (unless it's 25 years old or more), never meet EPA and NHTSA standards. That is not to say you can't bring in container loads of late model MkI Rabbit and Pickup parts. You can rebuild a US Model all you want.
Far Out Parts was importing New S.A. Citi and Caddy Parts for a while but, looks like they are closing up shop.
We could always get a travel agent and arrange a group wrecking yard tour package to S.A. and visit places like
Ace Auto Scrap Yard and jointly go in on a container. It would be an International Parts Run.
OMG!! Thats it a whole new business model !!! Forget EcoTourism, How about
DubSparesTourism!!! Trips to China, S.A., Germany, Etc. I can see it now!
15 Scrap Yards in 10 Days! Hotel, Air Fare, and Bus Transportation included for $XXX.xx** does not include taxes, gratuities, parts purchases, shipping and container fees.[/color][/i]
