Or you can buy a brand new vw caddy pickup here:

Even the sport truck is only:

R93,300.00 = 12,672.4 US Dollar

Plus several thousand for shipping, it would be the same as a new car here.

I wonder if it can be done with all of the stupid laws now.

I think it needs to meet the safety standards for that vehicle year, which it is unlikely to without serious money because it would have to be done by VW. I don't know this as fact, just what I've heard

On the subject of Chinese MkIIs...
Great Pics!!! Looks like the Rain Gutters and window Trim are identical to ours, so there is hope I can replace all of mine with new.

On The subject of S.A. MkI's

I think they are RH Drive.

Back when they were still making the Beetle in Mexico there was a company that did "restorations", you could drive your busted and rusted old beetle down to Ole Mejico. When it was time to drive it back across the border it was a shiney new beetle from the floor pan up with the same ID number. It's conceivable, You could ship your caddy to S.A. for a "Safari" and have it come back all newish. Shipping cost make that prohibitive.

Importing a whole car is impossible (unless it's 25 years old or more), never meet EPA and NHTSA standards. That is not to say you can't bring in container loads of late model MkI Rabbit and Pickup parts. You can rebuild a US Model all you want. Far Out Parts was importing New S.A. Citi and Caddy Parts for a while but, looks like they are closing up shop.

We could always get a travel agent and arrange a group wrecking yard tour package to S.A. and visit places like Ace Auto Scrap Yard and jointly go in on a container. It would be an International Parts Run.

OMG!!  Thats it a whole new business model !!! Forget EcoTourism, How about DubSparesTourism!!! Trips to China, S.A., Germany, Etc. I can see it now!

15 Scrap Yards in 10 Days! Hotel, Air Fare, and Bus Transportation included for $XXX.xx*

* does not include taxes, gratuities, parts purchases, shipping and container fees.[/color][/i]

The Chinese car market in modern times is essentially a creation of VW.  When I first started going there, about the ONLY taxi cab was a MkII Jetta of nearly Western identity.  There are several iterations of annual model change, and I just with I had the ability to bring home a few sets of bodywork to make some truly unique cars on this side of the Pacific.  You can also walk into a showroom and buy a brand new B2 or C3 Audi - but similarly unique styling.

They have them smaller, they have them larger, they have them newer, they have them older.....

Bottom line is, they have so much demand, they build everything and anything they can to cover the full spectrum of the market.  You want a real shocker, you should see what they ask for (and get, in cash) for an A8L/W12! (like a half million US or so!!).
