i dont want to over rev my engine but im having trouble keeping up with traffic otherwise... its an 86 1.6 na with a manual trans. if i push it i can go to 70. and it still wants to pull more. but the engine sounds like its going to die...looking for help..thanks

don't worry about overrevving the engine, it can handle 5000rpm easy. these engines are tough. the search function might help you. i'm sure others will chime in too

look on the bottom of the bell housing and get the two or three letter code and then go to http://www.scirocco.org/gears/ and see what your ratios are. They got a calculator for figuring your rpm @ what ever speed.

unless you have a run away you can't over rev your engine... it has a governor and will have trouble getting much passed 5k... well within the safety zone of the stock valve train i believe

Forgive me tagging on the same question- does the same apply to n/a vanagons, even though their IP was governed lower than any? My MK II replacement pump keeps pulling like crazy past the shift marks, whereas the original one started shutting down the engine just before it got to the mark. (I don't have a tach) I just don't know how high I should risk going- it performs so much better up high though, especially on a 3-4 shift.

what your sensing is the difference between a 8mm pump to prolly a 9mm pump that the mk2 is! your getting more fuel! better power! i recently did he same thing but in reverse! went from a 9mm pump to a 8mm pump big difference power wise! you can go as far as you want drive it likeyou stole it! :lol:

Just make sure the oil is up to temp and your engine is in good shape

like burn said. and if your injection pump is standard i've found its nearly impossible to 'over-rev' these engines... but feel free to conduct your own experiments.

how will i know if my pump is "standard" i have heard that 70mph is hard to attain with a stock mk2 golf 1.6 na

I have the same model as you shegal and I was wondering what your economy is depending on how you drive these mk2 n/a's? My normal economy is 48 mpg on highway and 43 in the city.

I do about 70 no problem in mine. It's first gear that I am always worried about. Does anyone know how hight the rpms go in first when getting up to speed? I just feel it.

im getting about the same milage as you are...i usualy do between 10 to 15 in first. then second from 15-20, third 20-25, fourth 25 to 40-45 fifth from 50-70....i drive about 100 miles a day...90% of which is highway

wow, driven like that the car'll last forever. I usually do 15-20ish in 1st, 30 in 2nd, 45 in third, 55 in 4th and whatever in 5th. The fastest I ever went pegged the speedo and then slightly faster so it was somewere between 85-90MPH. I have an FN tranny and a tach and in 5th gear goin' 50mph is 2000rpm, 70mph is 3000rpm. These engines are governed at like 5300rpm unless someone screwed it up. Hope this helps.

Don't know, but I've got a 91 with low gears that was still climbing at 140 kph, roughly 85mph. Don't usually run it that fast, but it wasn't complaining!
