Gasser and diesel starters ,,,,,,,,Mk1's

Are they the same? shouldnt be a difference

but look at the ground.....on the gas there is one and on the diesel there isnt ground on the solanoid

If anyone has both to compair could they please lend a helping hand?
Im really having a hard time moving my car without it running!

I think the diesel ones will always be rated higher since the diesel has more than double the compression to overcome.

right you are. A gas one in good shape will work in the summer but unlikely in colder temps

On a Quantum, putting the 2 starters side by side looks like father and son. Diesel one has to be twice the weight...

does the diesel have any different cranking speed?

I know the diesel starter is bigger, has more torque and therfore should crank faster being able to overcome the compresion. But, my diesel started died, after a Mk1 gas starter died, on the 2.016V turbo, the gear reduction starter that worked on that motor is now trying to start the 1.6td. crank speed seems to be about the same as my 98 TDI but still no start. Air trapped someplace I guess.

On my diesel the starter looked the same as the gasser (mk1's)

The diesel starter died and i installed the gasser one. With the glow on longer than normal an the pan heater on 20 min I could start my diesel in -20 cold/

My battery is a 850CCA and the cranking speed was alittle slow but it finally turned over...

I tried the samething on a older rabbit as the starter died and no go....
Im thinking its due to sludgy oil,

I beleave BURN is right.....above in saying...A gas one in good shape will work in the summer but unlikely in colder temps

our cold low has been around 30 deg F and when I've been cranking the 1.6TD it's been between 40 to 65. I just can't seem to get the air out. Was concerned my starter might be a lil weak and a proper bigger diesel starter might crank it with more ooomph to pump out the air. Using a group 41 battery and a jumper battery in parallel. Crank a while, charge, crank, charge, etc.

I believe the big hill in the back yard is calling. :wink:

yah I just boosted it off a running engine... that would give it what i needs to get going the first time or so...

or run a battery in series with it..like the above poster use jumpers and charge then crank then charge crank etc.

is this is old car with low ass compression? your sure the fuel start/stop solnoid is getting 12v?

plug it in block heater and glows....got voltage?

brand new engine, so rings have not seated. But with compresion testor in #4 glow plug spot and all other glow plugs and injectors in, 440 psi on 8 strokes.

been running the batteries together for more amps. fuel is flowing, glow plugs brand new and getting voltage, injectors new reman Bosch TD injectors, stop solonoid pulled out and verified it works. Giles perf pump and was pumping great when it left his shop. It ran for a minute, I blipped the throttle and was suprised how fast it reved, instinct made me turn it off, never had a diesel rev that fast. :lol: not started since then, but keep seeing bubbles on the fuel return line. So I'm thinking bubbles in injectors. I can smell a faint burnt diesel odor from exhaust while cranking.

Only thing not new in the starting department is the starter and the battery. battery charges up and checks fine. Not sure what the gear reduction starter came off of. when I killed the 2 gasser starters and the diesel starter on the 2.0 turbo, friend at the junk yard handed me the curnet starter and said this is what you need. Seems to crank about the same speed or a little faster than what is on my 98 TDI and looks similar.

might be the weekend before I can get help to try and drag start it

Im defonately not en expert in that department but I beleave that your air leaks in the fuel system would be more of an issue?

is it possible to try cranking it on a warmer day? Ive never had a gilles pump re-build, Id love to get that Upgrade.

Yes the diesel starter is more powerfull, but the solenoids are the same.

the diesel starter changed a little while ago didnt it? I think the older ones cranked faster, but the newer ones have some kind of gear reduction to put out more tq, but at a slower rpm.

I'm not sure about cranking speeds but the late mk2 ones (the smaller ones) have a 4:1 planetary gear reduction. They are my favorite starter to use
