just a few questions
« on: March 28, 2008, 08:52:56 am »
Howdy Gang,
On our '85 Golf diesel- we didn't get a operators manual so
1. Where is the switch to make the rear window wiper operate?

2. How to remove a plastic cap on the 5th gear lock out- with out breaking it or is it needed to be put back on?

3. This motor has 300+kKms on it - I just received the tools and timing belt from eBay and wonder if the T/belt broke would the engine need to be rebuilt -I know that  the head and valves would be bent but what about the rods or pistons do they get damaged.

4. I installed a real oil pressure gauge and get 75+ PSI while running-
Isn't that too much pressure? Don't get me wrong I think it is great but after driving aircooled VWs since early '60s it just seems to be way up there.

5. Does anybody here mix filtered used engine oil with the diesel ( it seems like getting free fuel- I've read about WVO but what about used oil?

cheers

What do you mean by "Make the rear window operate"?

I dont know what ya mean on the "5th gear lock" out someone else will have to reply there.

If your timing belt brakes you can count on a complete rebuild, few have gotten away with a few bent valves but not many. Replace it as soon as the belt arrives and be safe.

75 psi is not a problem, many will hit 100+ psi when cold. Mine runs right @ 60 running down the freeway when @ operating temp for 30 min or longer.

I run WMO all the time, make sure it's filtered and there is ZERO water in it.
I usually mix it about 25-35%.

Welcome and have fun..

Hi Ya Zuki
I wanted to know how to make the rear window Wiper work- I don't see any switch

What do you filter the used engine oil with?

I was thinking about rigging up a few rolls of toilet paper(unused of course) in a housing and letting gravity do its job

I think you push up on the wiper stalk. The same one for the front wipers.

2. How to remove a plastic cap on the 5th gear lock out- with out breaking it or is it needed to be put back on?

Where are you measuring from and what is the oil temperature?

Thanks for that brokevw site "Burn your money"
good stuff to read there

The oil pressure is taken off the oil filter sender
no idea what the oil temp is but the pressure  remains 75+psi all the time while driving.
hot idle it is about 45 psi
I'd sure like our aircooled VWs to have that kind of pressure
thanks

Try taking it off the back of the head, (drivers side).

There is a port right above the coolant port.

You will get a much more accurate reading there as it it closer to the end of the path the oil takes.
