Yes the diesel starter is more powerfull, but the solenoids are the same.

Don't the solenoids just flick the bendix out? Thus justifiably same size??

That's correct.

Yes a mk2 start will bolt right up to a mk1 but the wiring might be slightly different. Nothing serious though.

Yes, the reason I mentioned this is the diesel starter is hard to find over hear. All that was wrong with mine was an overheated terminal post on the solenoid. The supply of the s/h petrol version is quite plentiful & got me going again.

I guess if engine /glowplugs are doing their thing correctly then most starts are only a couple of revs anyway. That is why I got away with using a crap battery for several years knowing that until I had to crank for 10 to 20 revs starting was not a problem.... then a glowplug failed which altered the scenario :wink:
